May I Submit a Modest Proposal...

When dealing with people of differing views, I've found that most conversations devolve and get lost in messy anecdotes, intellectually dishonest tactics, and general incivility.

What I've tried to do in the past is challenge people that are lent to such 'habits' to hash out our issue on one particular site where anything falling short of clean, clear, and moderated debate is not tolerated. The problem with this is that seldom do those I challenge step up because they have to go to another site, register, log in, learn the features, etc. (I'm sure there are other reasons, but those are the most often given).

Why not create a forum specifically for formal debate with strict rules and moderation. That way, when a debate begins to devolve or one party is being dishonest, the debate can remain on site and only the two with the specific disagreement will be allowed to participate in a thread where only the highest standards of debate are upheld.

I think it would go much, much farther to create consensus or illuminate false beliefs in such a diverse community as this.

No, it sucks.

I like it, but I would add:

It sucks because I don't like using things like 'reason', 'facts', or 'logic'.

2. What does that even mean?

What does it have to do with the OP?

Did you not understand it, or are you just trolling?

3. Obviously a reasonable discussion is not to your liking.

As far as a formal discussion having very few adherants, I would agree with you. But not in tone.

7. No.

The rules are be civil. If it doesn't pass a jury, you get locked out of that thread.

Why do people come to a new site, read the TOS, and then want to immediately change said rules? Didn't you read the Announcement at DU? No mirt, no Host, no admin visible as on DU.

Live with it.

8. Reading comprehension.

It's a thing you should try.

I didn't say 'change the rules'.

But I am curious just how it is you think formal debate, the sort that can actually settle issues rather than fragment them into anecdotes, emotions, and dishonesty, can ever exist in a place like this without creating a space for it.

The simple answer is, "It cannot". So what this place is going to become is nothing less than a fustercluck of accusations and jury alerts.

When you get a 'jury' of 5 wingnuts that decides to hide your post because you said the Earth is billions of years old, you think you'll be okay with that?

Sure bud, whatever.

If the only means of 'settling' arguments is to find more friends that agree with you than the other guy, then nothing ever gets settled. But If you're a wingnut, that's fine.
