Trump and Ryan Agree: Let’s Dismantle Social Security

Last Thursday morning, a huge crowd of reporters breathlessly covered presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump’s meeting with House Speaker Paul Ryan. But the real action took place the day before the meeting — and the person who “caved” wasn’t Ryan, but Trump.

In his quest for the Republican nomination, Donald Trump has attacked Hispanics and Muslims. Now that he is pivoting to the general election, seeking campaign contributions from wealthy donors and endorsements from the Republican establishment, he is signaling his willingness to go after working families.

To anyone who watched a Republican debate or one of Trump’s rallies, he unabashedly proclaimed that he would not cut Social Security. Indeed, he explicitly contrasted himself with the other Republican Presidential contenders (all of whom, except for Mike Huckabee, support benefit cuts). Given that only 17 percent of Republican voters support Social Security cuts, this was an important part of Trump’s populist message and likely a major reason for his victory.

Now that Trump has clinched the nomination and is seeking money from the GOP’s big donors, and support from the party’s establishment, however, he has changed his mind — or at least his position. (Who knows what he really thinks?)

Source

Trump has publicly stated that he is not in favor of cutting Social Security, but now that he's the nominee, admits that he lied for political expediency.

Trump lied, I'm so surprised! How will his supporters spin this one? As a clever move? Like filing bankruptcy umpteen times was a brilliant business strategy?

2. Cutting social security is the one thing he can't say

and expect to be elected, whether his big wig donors want him to say it or not. He'd be as popular as a decomposed dead rat in the wall.

5. Not an accurate OP title

If you read the source for that article from HuffPo, it PREDICTS that will be Trump's supposedly new position. Nowhere does it say that he has "agreed with Ryan" to cut SS.

Quote from that article:

"For that reason, it’s quite possible that now that he’s reassured Ryan and the GOP establishment, Trump will be doing yet another about-face soon."

6. This is exactly what I predicted: claim to protect Social Security...

Medicare and Medicaid in exchange for passing huge tax cuts under the assumption that lower taxes will invigorate the economy thereby increasing the amount of incoming taxes. Then when this fails to materialize promote cutting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid as the only way to rein in the deficit. It is the classics bait and switch.

7. Trump's desire to cut Social Security should be widely broadcast and posted. Hopefully people who

are informed about this will vote against him. I collect Social Security Disability and would miss it if it were cut.

12. I find for the defense...and it's not even close.

You posted articles that have two primary sources. One of the sources is Sam Clovis, a Trump adviser, saying that if their economic plan doesn't produce enough revenue to solve the problem they will take a bipartisan look at every program out there, including Social Security. The second "source" is a report that repeats what Trump said to Paul Ryan, but there is no mention of who was present at that conversation that is now reporting it. I have no reason to believe that it wasn't totally made up.

I think Trump is the worst major party candidate in my lifetime (and that is saying something), but you haven't shown anything that indicates that he plans on cutting social security. The things that he actually does say are bad enough. There is no reason for his opponents to make fools of themselves by making shit up.

13. It may be that it's made up, but I don't think so.

Those were only 5 articles on the subject. Until he and/or Paul Ryan speak up about it, I have no reason to doubt it. It's definitely his speed.

We'll see, I guess.
