Review: ‘Bush,’ a Biography as Scathing Indictment

For George W. Bush, the summer already looks unbearable. The party he gave his life to will repudiate him by nominating a bombastic serial insulter who makes the famously brash former president look like a museum docent by comparison. And a renowned presidential biographer is weighing in with a judgment that makes Mr. Bush’s gentleman’s Cs at Yale look like the honor roll.

If Mr. Bush eventually gets a more sympathetic hearing by history, as he hopes, it will not start with Jean Edward Smith’s “Bush,” a comprehensive and compelling narrative punctuated by searing verdicts of all the places where the author thinks the 43rd president went off track. Mr. Smith’s indictment does not track Donald J. Trump’s, but the cumulative effect is to leave Mr. Bush with few defenders in this season of his discontent.

<snip>

Mr. Smith leaves no mystery where he stands on Mr. Bush’s place in history. The first sentence of his book: “Rarely in the history of the United States has the nation been so ill-served as during the presidency of George W. Bush.”

The last: “Whether George W. Bush was the worst president in American history will be long debated, but his decision to invade Iraq is easily the worst foreign policy decision ever made by an American president.”

Among our 43 US Presidents, George W. Bush is currently ranked #34 by scholars - the worst since Warren G. Harding. Obama comes in at #17.

1. So a biography that doesn't include sitting with the person?

Yeah that is a compelling piece of toilet paper.

I love your use of the word scholars. As if these ruminations make it ex-cathedra infallible!

Betcha we can get other scholars who would rank teh presidents differently.

2. A biography is an account of someone's life written by someone else.

Such accounts are often written after the subject's death. In every one of those cases the biographee is not personally interviewed.

3. But one that is written about a subject while they're alive

Without interviewing that subject has about as much intellectual weight as one written by Kitty Kelley.

15. Bush is ranked in the bottom 10.

Obama is ranked in the top 20. Because he got bin Laden.

17. Did SEAL Team 6 rent their own choppers?

Why didn't SEAL Team 6 get bin Laden before May 2, 2011? Hint for bonus points: What changed on January 20, 2009?

19. Maybe you are right. But he is an effective asshole.

Do you want the Commander in Chief to be an effective asshole or an ineffective clown who impersonates actual warriors?

5. And just why is it that all unauthorized biographies are worthless if the subject is still alive?

Bush declined to speak with Smith as he has done with other authors. He was unavailable to the author.

8. That does make a difference, I didn't know that.

But given the opening line in the book, I have to assume there was knowledge that it would be a "hostile" biography.

11. You have a good point there.

I don't think GWB has cooperated with any biographer. If I were he, I don't think I would want any biographies published about me right now.

10. Because this man has practiced yellow journalism

He cannot verify all his personal opinions of Bush but prints them anyway- it should be a work of fiction then.

Bush was no giant of a president- But history will be kinder to him than the present crop of weeds posing as the intellectual elite.

6. Bush is very much alive

so this becomes a personal op ed and not a biography if he chooses not to glean info from the one he is writing on.

13. Plenty of biographies have no first person interviews with the subject

Lincoln
Patton
Ike
JFK
MLK
George Washington
Robert E Lee

I think you mean Autobiography
