Ken Burn's Civil War just got added to Netflix.

Which is great. I remember watching it way back when it first premiered on PBS as a kid. So I'm basically watching it with new eyes and a new perspective.

I recently watched the movie Gettysburg, too. Jeff Daniels was awesome in that movie.

It should be explosive.

Hundreds of sock accounts lay dead or dying. Blood saturating this sacred internet ground.

Keyboards worn out within weeks. Processors burnt out before the first 100 days. Carpal Tunnel ravaged many an Americans hands. Dark days, indeed.

The serene look on the older man's face pretty much nails my feelings about the music. The score behind Burn's documentaries has always been so good. And I'm a guy who's iPhone is filled with heavy metal & 90s hip hop.

9. That seems high. A quick look shows it cheaper.

http://m.shoppbs.org/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=ken%20burns%20civil%20war&origkw=ken+burns+civil+war&sr=1

Still pricey in today's digital age, but they are a non-profit. So I imagine the mark up helps with costs.

10. That's my supposition as well: it's not for the series, it's for the financial support of PBS.

But I'll wager having the series come out on Netflix is cutting them off at the knees.

29. Democrats, Jeff Davis and Alex Stephens* were DEMOCRATS

They were Democrats, who ran as Democratic candidates in the Democratic Party

And were elected as Democrats from the Democratic party.

No matter how much you try to spout untrue facts you can't win this.

Truth is not on your side with this

Just to be crystal clear I know you're being deliberately untruthful, not just your usual Obtuse M.O.

Alexander Stephens Post Bellum was elected Numerous times as a DEMOCRAT

* To Educate you Jefferson Jeff Davis and Alexander Stephens were the President and Vice President of the Confederate States of America

Your difficulty grasping such a simple fact truly shows the great victory that happened when you started to agree that the CSA were vile & weak cowardly traitors.

Seeing you concur that basic fact truly gives me hope that, with persistence, even the least educated can learn!

11. If you get a chance, visit the battlefield

They have a self guided tour on CD that follows the chronology of the battle from the Railroad Cut to Pickett's charge.

It follows a film in the Visitors Center/restored Cyclorama made by Burns and narrated by Morgan Freeman on how the battle happened (Mostly by accident); the role technology played (Buford's dismounted cavalry, using Spencer and Henry repeaters were mistaken by the Confederates for a much larger force) and the egos involved (Mostly Lee's refusal to back away from what he thought was a sure thing).

But it's really something to stand on Little Round Top or in Devil's Den and see what's left of the low stone walls the Maine defenders hid behind to defend the key southern flank.

My grand kids, that aren't impressed by much of anything historical, really loved it.

25. The Gettysburg battlefield is just huge

Wraps around the town and into the hills South of town for well over a mile, in a fish hook shape, ending at Little Round Top. And that doesn't include the Railroad Cut, where it all started, that's another mile and a half mile or more to the Northwest, outside of the town. It's a minimum of an all day visit, maybe two days to really get a feel for the size and scope of it.

I want to visit more of the Revolutionary War battlefields too. I've been to Lexington, Concord and Bunker Hill. Also was at Yorktown, Kings Mountain and Saratoga.

My poor kids got a heavy duty dose of American History on most of our vacations as they were growing up. Now it's the grand kids turn.

At some point I'd like to get down to Cowpens in South Carolina to round off my Revolutionary War visits.

26. I've been to Lookout Mountain overlooking Chattanooga.

During the battle there...

Up the 400-foot-high ridge the Federals advanced in small, V-shaped clusters, following their regimental flags. Disorganized Confederates withdrew before them, stumbling backward over rocks and stumps. Their comrades on the summit held their fire, for fear of hitting their own men. At the foot of the ridge, ever-combative Phil Sheridan sportively lifted a silver whiskey flask to toast the Confederates watching from above. “Here’s to you!” he called. A Rebel cannonball landed nearby, spraying him with dirt and debris. “That’s damn ungenerous,” Sheridan cried. “I shall take those guns for that.”

And he proceeded to do just that.
