Best science fiction film of the year (2002): "Spider-Man".

Yeah, I know....another superhero film. I'm including superhero films in the science fiction genre because by any reasonable definition most of them are science fiction. Just taking this as an example: "What if a young man's genetic structure was changed as a result of being bitten by a mutated arachnid?" It's at least as science fictional a premise as "The Fly".. Expect a few more spandex-clad winners by 2016.

Anyhoo, a number of films of note this year. "Men in Black II" was ok, "Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones" was almost as awful as Episode I, and "The Time Machine" was very much inferior to the 1960 version.

Honorable mention to "Minority Report", a pretty good film.

The winner, "Spider-Man", has Toby Maguire absolutely nailing his part of Peter Parker. Sam Raimi's quirky direction seems like an odd fit, but it works.

2. One of the best ...

... of a long procession of super hero origin stories to come out in the last decade and a bit.
