Best science fiction film of the year (2008): "WALL-E"
We skip 2 years! Nothing outstanding in 2006. Honorable mention to "Idiocracy", if nothing else for convincing both sides of the political spectrum that the film is making fun of the other side (even if it is just a reimagining of the story "The Marching Morons"). "Superman Returns" is largely a remake, and "V for Vendetta" is interesting but pretentious.
Similarly, 2007 doesn't have a winner. Neither Marvel superhero movie stands out ("Fantastic Four 2" and "Spider-Man 3"), and there's yet another mediocre adaptation of "I Am Legend",
2008: A remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is....meh, Honorable mention to "Iron Man" which kicks off the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The winner? "WALL-E", an animated film by Pixar which, while a bit preachy, is still charming and sweet. It has virtually no dialogue for the first half hour, and doesn't need it.
