Mossbergs New 590 Shockwave: The New Coach Gun?

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2017/03/john-boch/mossbergs-new-590-shockwave-new-coach-gun/

Mossberg’s new Shockwave shotgun was introduced at the SHOT Show and is finally being seen in the wild. The shotgun, classified by our friends at the BATFE as a “non-NFA firearm,” features a 14-inch barrel and a 26.5-inch overall length. In short, it’s a short-barrelled shotgun of a sort that doesn’t require a tax stamp. Just don’t conceal one about your person, in which case their determination may change (per the BATF Compliance Division letter).

Some claim the Shockwave is effectively a 5+1 capacity version of a coach gun, “ideal for home defense.” Whatever the gun’s utility as a home defense piece, it should nevertheless make for a potent, compact package. Mossberg claims that it will shoot the Aguila’s Minishells with an adapter, significantly increasing capacity, (and reducing recoil). The Shockwave retails for about $450.

Before you rush out and buy one, you may want to pay attention to this caveat from the Mossberg website:

NOTE: This letter only speaks to its FEDERAL status. There could be local/state laws that prohibit the sale of this gun in your state. Consult your State Police for clarification.

1. I'll take a wild guess and say it's a "no" from NY.

But I haven't looked, so a pleasant surprise could be forthcoming.

2. Prohibited, it seems. Too bad.

https://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/state-gun-laws/new-york/

There is no state license requirement for the possession of a rifle or shotgun, so long as the rifle has barrel(s) at least 16 inches in length and the shotgun has barrel(s) at least 18 inches in length.

3. I think one better have a pretty good lawyer

to carry one of those things around, even if it is technically not an NFA weapon.

I'm fairly familiar with NFA rules, having some short barrel rifles and suppressors, but I wouldn't touch one of those Mossbergs with a 10 foot pole. Yeah, it may stretch through a loophole and not technically be a Short Barrel Shotgun (not being designed to fire from the shoulder), but pretty much every cop I know is going to call it an Any Other Weapon, and likely hassle the owner for a stamp or registration. Even here in gun-friendly Texas carrying that thing to a range will invite continual hassle, even if you eventually win in court. (The argument will be whether it is "readily concealable.)

Life is too short for that hassle.

7. I wouldn't sweat this one

I'd carry a copy of the BATFE classification letter and a link to their finding. I'd worry more if I got pulled over with an AR-15 pistol with a Sig-arm brace installed. Many police would consider that combo an illegal SBR on looks alone.

8. No thanks had enough of short shottys and damaged wrists of shooters

Had a Sgt ask me to fit his M500 in Baghdad with a pistol grip

He fired 2 Magnum slugs to practise and hurt himself with the recoil

rather a full stock and short barrel for better control
