SciFi Trope: unified government

I'm thinking of mythos where each planet seems to possess a singular government and numerous planets form larger governments.

I don't know about aliens but I don't think humans will ever be that united. I doubt the US will ever be that united so I see no reason to scale upwards to a planetary or galactic level.

Yeah, yeah, they always depict a legislative body made up of representatives from geographically dispersed areas. But they never depict someone manipulating a single nation on another planet because that would destabilize the entire world. It's always large scale. I think it would be just that easy fracture a federation/alliance/whatever.

I don't care how big the practical travel radius allowed by the technology, at the end of the day the human soul is still very tiny.

2. Who knows

Right now here is no way that would happen. But we also haven't had a major war in Western Europe for about 72 years, which I think is a record.

I think it might be a good thing that we haven't formed a one world government. Competition breeds innovation. If you get a chance read Harry Turtledove's world war series which provides an example of this. Though I had the idea before I read the books.

9. Those are fantastic books.

One of my absolute favorite series.

"Everyone fights each other, until the aliens show up"

3. Humans are not herd animals

The ideal size for a human government in physical area and population is about like an average USA county

4. How would our mindset change with the discovery of extra-terrestrial life?

Right now we are competing with each other. Would that change if there were a threat from another planet? Nothing like an external threat to unify.

8. Humans seldom respond uniformly. Even the Nazis enjoyed their quislings and Vichys as

others resisted, violently or otherwise, and others just tried to get by.

5. Alien planets usually have a single ecosystem too.

The desert planet, the jungle planet, the ice planet, the ocean planet, the swamp planet, etc, etc.

It's just lazy writing and simplified, dumbed-down content for easy digestion.

6. Yeah, that was going to be one of my future complaints.

That and uniformly distributed technology.

10. Government will eventually become an anachronism.

The more likely SciFi trope is corporate dominance.

Governments are already nothing more than proxies for promoting corporate interests.
