Why do you post?

I am just trying to understand the phenomena of message boards, including perhaps my own reasons. Inasmuch as almost every revelation on a message board can lead to mockery or worse, I understand if people don't want to reply. As for me, I promise on all I hold dear that the only thing that I will do with or about your reply is thank you for it.

9. I find the far left and right fascinating.

From Sharia Law claims to Trump is a Nazi. All the people who entrench themselves in these outlandish positions are not people who I interact with in person on a daily basis. Or maybe they are and they’re just not as vocal as online. Certainly not as......prickly.

Which makes meeting relaxed normal people who have differing opinions but don’t let that interfere with being cool online, that much more fun.

I met a guy who played in a band I am a big fan of, right here on this board. You gotta take a person at their word, of course. But he mentioned the band offhandedly and it blew my mind. You don’t expect something like that.

I'm on a few message boards, although this is the only political one. The others are maker and music related. I have my ritual with them. I wake up an hour or so before my wife, so I make coffee and fire up the boards for a while until breakfast is ready, then I'm done for the day. In the evening I fire them up again while she's making dinner, and because my office has a door to the outside, I'll glace at them when I go out to smoke.

I must confess I really didn't look too hard at this board before joining. I was looking for something more general discussion than the rather specific nature of the others, and the name appealed to me. Had I read more, I probably would have moved on. But now I'm here and know the lay of the land and the personalities, so what the hell, y'know?

18. I post in hopes of conversing with people.

To learn and understand where other people are coming from. People and politics both fascinate me. I know this is probably the last place I should attempt real conversation, but there are some Rightys here that return decency and respect if extended to them. Some will just be dicks no matter what.

It appears there are only a handful of us who aren’t here just to be trolls. It’s a shame, really. There aren’t many boards that allow both sides like this one does.

Until 2008, I posted on another board that allowed both sides, but it was heavily censored for whatever reason jumped into the head of the owner or one of the more "active" mods. This board has a jury system, so whatever the members allow stands.

In a roomful of people, they almost snap their necks, looking a one person who speaks and then the next speaker. They'll stay awake and curious, even if they're crying from exhaustion. Then they'll wake up a few hours later. It's as though they can't learn fast enough. It's amazing.

I used to want to see everything on a board, even if I chose not to reply to everything I'm over it.

40. Just say yes to ignore. Once you do, you won't believe

that you resisted for so long. I mean, some people have made thousands of posts on this board that say nothing of value. Seriously, what are the odds that the next will be something you don't want to miss?

I didn't put anyone on ignore during my first three or four years of posting. Then, someone was so vapid and so persistent in posting to me that I finally broke down. After that it was easy.

My sister once said, "Adultery is like murder. The first time is the hardest." I have no idea where she got that. Unless I'm very much mistaken, she has never committed adultery or murder. I don't even know what made her say it. But it applies to my use of the ignore feature. Life is too short.

From my livingroom window at 2:30pm Sat. Jan 13 2018

And OMG - ya remembered that oil cooler thing! It surprises me how many mechanics out there who profess to know their trade do not even understand the simple plumbings of an internal combustion engine!

At one time I wished I had remained in California after I returned from living, and working there (successfully self-employed - yeah - fixing cars), but am now grateful that fate kept me here.

I do not think I would enjoy living there now, anywhere near as much as I enjoyed it back in 79-80.

64. Yes indeedy

I have a camera with remote on a tripod within reach of my semi-permanent perch on the couch and "shot" bear, moose, deer, fox, hawks and many other feathered friends.

On traveling, besides my numerous tours of the US as an adult, my father took us on trips in my youth to the East Coast numerous summers - 5 weeks with Ma, 4 kids, dawg and a modified utility trailer with a wagon-train style kitchen he built on the back of it. This was in the late 50's and early 60s, when picnic areas were maintained by our then Department of Highways. We pitched our tents in various styles of campsites, but Pa treated us to motel rooms when the weather was foul - only if we were on the move - if we were already camped, we stuck it out . . .

We did PEI b4 there was the causeway - yup - ferried us and our vehicle over, that was the only way to reach PEI (other than by air) back then. Not only did we do the Gaspe, we also did the Cabot Trail which circumvents Cape Breton Island.

Pa was quite the wanderer/explorer.

there are times when I wonder why I bother.

53. Thank you for replying to the OP.

I hope it's okay if I break the promise in the OP to add that I am sorry about your anxiety. I am not usually anxious, but I did once have what I assume was an anxiety attack, just while doing nothing more stressful than walking to a nearby convenience store to pick up a couple of food items. I have no idea why it happened. My mind did not go anywhere scary. I think my mind was too busy trying to figure out what I was experiencing, why, and how I might stop it.

Until it passed--also don't know why--I felt as though everything under my skin wanted to escape out of my skin ASAP. That's not exact, but the best I can do. Whether or not that was an anxiety attack, I am very sorry that you have a a recurring issue for you.

I'm glad posting helps. In addition, I'm sure you've tried various things like meditation, mantras (could be a sentence from the Bible, if you are a believer). Once, while I was in the hospital for surgery, a nun was kind enough to give me a bunch of reassuring Bible verses, printed one per index card. If you are a believer, something like that might help. If not, you could make up something similar using secular sources and keep it with you. Then, whenever you are anxious, you can read through the calming cards.

Take kindly, wonderful care of yourself.

48. Interesting question

Last edited Sat Jan 13, 2018, 07:48 AM - Edit history (1)

I think for several reasons. First, it helps me keep up with events, particularly political events, back in the States. While I do read US news sources, my primary news comes through British websites and news organisations.

Second, I enjoy sharing cultural posts -- text, video, image -- regarding elements that I have found beautiful in my experience. For example, I enjoy sharing items related to 20th century (particularly the first half) American authors. I additionally enjoy sharing cultural insights I've derived from a life of travel and living abroad.

Third, I like discussions regarding religion and beliefs, having grown up not particularly religious. At university I had studied the works of Frazer, Weston, Eliade, Dumezil, and Campbell. The advent of the internets stunned me with the fact the people actually believe clearly fictitious narratives as, prior to sdiscovering this online, I had assumed that the majority of theists simply took these stories as metaphors, adages, lessons, etc. Certainly those Christian theists I did known were that way and, while I knew and worked with numerous Muslims in the 90s and I recognised they were not that way, i.e., they believed their shit with all their hearts, I wrote it off to a lack of intellectual development in a country that had seen no Renaissance and a religion that had seen no Reformation.

And finally, as a libertarian, I enjoy gigging both sides on their partisanship. Devotion to "our team" and disparagement of "their team" is a phenomena that's very easy to ridicule.

60. I like to get other people's perspective on issues.

I stumbled across DU and was fascinated with some of the strange people there.
Someone there complained about DI, so I thought I would have a look.
I like the fact that both side of an issue are allowed, unlike DU.
Then I noticed some posters were, shall we say, INSANE!
They would go away (banned, I suppose) then reappear as a "sock"!
They were from both sides, too. Left, right, whatever.
Some posters I just skip over, some are incoherent, but some are insightful and interesting, you being one of those.
I'm just hanging out, listening, sometimes commenting, enjoying life!

Some years back my first boyfriend tracked me down after 40 years and he gave me a call. The first thing he asked me was “Do you still argue about everything”. I told him I most certainly did. And then we immediately started arguing about politics, sports and everything else under the sun, like we’d never been apart.

We both agreed our relationship would have never worked, or as he put it, “You would have killed me if we stayed together”.

I just post to keep my skills up, although I sometimes get muddled up.
