1. Some you can have interesting discussions with,

some you can't.

2. The jury is still out on this site.

Ask again in a few months.

3. I think it's still too early to call.

There are some here who can be reasoned with, and others who are just here to disrupt. I think it's going to take a while to sort itself out.

4. Reasonable discussion is possible here.

There are always those (on both sides) that turn everything into an insult fest.

5. I have been able to bury some conservatives with facts on voting issues

You do not see conservatives making the same silly claims about the existence of voter fraud that were common on early voting threads. More and more conservatives have given up making claims that they can not support with facts.

6. Far too many on the extreme right and the extreme left are intolerant, childish and simply

unpleasant. Not all, but many.

We need more moderates and independents here, and we need more people of all stripes who can carry on a civil conversation.

7. pretty much a waste of time

The right wing has adopted and colonized this place for no purpose but to pound its chest and post its propaganda and bigotry, and its hatred of the ideals of even liberal democracy and anyone who advocates them, under as thin a veil of pretense of "discussion" as it can manage.

It's not really a matter of "The gulf between the two sides is unbridgeable". It's a matter of having better things to do than read that kind of crap from people who are not the least bit interested in anything but advancing the interests of the hateful right wing, and how best to serve them -- by whatever means necessary.

But then, what passes for left here doesn't impress me any more than it did at the DU. The "liberal" disregard for principles one might expect liberals to actually uphold -- like human rights (viz. any criminal justice-related subject that might arise, just for example) -- is not even veiled.

Both sides share a fundamental contempt for the rights and dignity and worth of individuals that belies any claims they might make to adhere either to a religion or to a constitution. Obviously I generalize; there are some here on what passes for the left who speak out of decency and compassion and not just blind self-interest, but more who don't.

The main thing is that there is not much here that could be called "left"; the gaze is directed firmly navelward, within the borders of the US, the place where merely advocating consideration of policies that are solidly in the centre in most comparable countries (like public health insurance and firearms control and a meaningful social safety net) is downright freakish.

The right knows its causes and knows what it wants and has a clear strategy. The left doesn't seem to have a clue.

And in case anybody objects to my comments: the OP asked for opinions. These are mine.

Look at the actual distance between Obama and Romney in the chart here:
http://politicalcompass.org/uselection2012
You can barely see light between them.

And letmypeoplevote used it to give his ego a little more air.

I think of this place as a diamond mine I have to dig through a hell of a lol of shit before I get to the jewel of a real discussion.

13. feel quite free to put me on ignore

(I find it entertaining when people do that, since the rest of the world can see me shred their posts, but they remain blissfully ignorant foolish-looking.)

If you have something to say about me, have the fucking CIVILITY to say it TO me.

Or amuse me by being the picture of incivility while you moan about incivility ...

Commenting on your comments up thread would only derail this thread. And I feel this thread is better off without that derailment.

15. and you are all so silly

when you pretend to read the emotional status of a complete stranger.
