Captain Marvel is kicking the box office's ass

We can now add “the American box office” to the various things whose ass Carol Danvers has officially kicked; per Variety, the MCU’s latest big-budget offering, Captain Marvel, is on track to make more than $150 million at the domestic box office this weekend, making it the most successful 2019 film premiere to date—and by, like, a lot. (Its nearest competitor was M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, which made roughly a quarter of that number when it debuted back in January.)

Of course, as a Marvel movie, Captain Marvel’s success can only really be compared in terms of its fellow CGI-heavy costumed epics—in which case, it’s still sitting fairly pretty. If it stays on its current course, Brie Larson’s Skrull-punching debut outing will end up being the seventh-most successful MCU opening to date, trailing behind only the Avengers films, Black Panther, Civil War, and, uh, Iron Man 3. (What can we say? Once upon a time we were all really excited to watch Ben Kingsley fight Robert Downey Jr.!)

3. hehe.. yea, I've seen lots of Lefty out there organizing people to go buy

multiple tickets etc to boost the numbers.
Truth is, it's a mediocre break-even that has little appeal to what should have been the target audience of comic fans.
DVD sales will tell the real story after lefty gets bored with this drive and moves on to the next thing

4. So was Black Panther

Yet as of 10 months ago it had generated 1.35B in revenues.

Yep, Captain Marvel did 150M on its first weekend because a bunch of “lefties” bought multiple tickets to boost sales. Oh Dave, you are funny!

6. Number of people who watched the movie in the movie theaters is the only accurate way...

...to compare that $150M claim to movies of the past.

17. I would dare say

the better metric is the number of people who come back to watch it again. But we don't historically measure that way so it would be unfair to apply now but it would be better metric.

With that said, the movie was bound to do well if it was at all entertaining even just a little bit. Lots of media attention does that for a movie.

2. Don't worry. The Right will go on believing that the movie was a box office disaster

because the star said mean things about them no matter what the numbers. That’s because they operate on emotion, not fact.

5. Yawn. I never owned a comic book and can't stand unrealistic superhero(ine) movies...

But I can't help but wonder how many liberal organizations bought blocks of tickets. Hell, over at the DUmp, I've seen threats of tombstones for criticizing this movie in any way.

9. 150M on the first weekend? Really!

IT’S A TRAP!

What will you say next week? What did you say about Black Panther? Sad that Conservatives work off of emotion and not facts.

10. marvel movies sell.

all the anger from weirdos who care will not change that.

secret purchases of blocks of tickets seems pretty stupid.

19. That's nice.

I didn't watch Black Panther until I could watch it for free because of all the SJW yammering about, "Finally, the Black Man gets a superhero movie!" Which I thought was stupid beyond all belief. When I got around to watching it, I found a movie that doesn't deserve the praise and awards it received. Granted, I didn't really mind the bit about an ethno-state with technological superiority, a wall, and a strict immigration policy.

I would have preferred to see Monica Rambeau as Captain Marvel. She is a far more interesting character than Carol Danvers.
