1. This is good news.

It's pathetic that such a law was ever necessary.

2. Keep in mind...

That the rabid out of control po-po are not the ones targeting these 12 year old sugar peddlers.

"Consider, for example, the more than three dozen cases reported around the country of local bureaucrats flexing their power to stamp out the menace of . . . children’s lemonade stands."

It is out of control local governments that are ordering the po-po to swoop in and shut down these illegal hydration operations...

Yes. It is ridiculous that we need to have a law to stop politicians from being idiots.

8. Wrong...

In this incident and others as well there was outside influence that caused the officers to respond.

Sorry but the vast majority of officers in this country do not have any interest in shutting down lemonade stands.

I have seen this same shit all over. The smaller the community the worse it is. Some village trustee or city council member gets butt hurt about something and he is calling command staff at a PD demanding something be done and if not, guess where he/she/it votes on the next budget.

If an officer is told to go bust the girls by his command staff you can be damn sure he is going to otherwise you get the foot patrol duty in the park with all the homeless people.

Police work is filled with political bullshit.

You were wrong in your .45 cal thread and you are wrong in this one.

I suggest you just get over it.

10. Yes...

They have discretion.

However they are also required by policy to follow "lawful orders".

Discretion is the rank and file not giving a shit about lemonade stands UNTIL ordered by command staff to shut them down.

"But most are too fucking stupid" to understand that.

But yeah, I get it, you watched a cop show on TV so you are an expert.

3. That's the thing that surprised me the most when I started my own business

I expected workmen's comp, taxes, of all kinds, etc. But all the permits and nickel and dime fess, I had to submit all kinds of paperwork on the composition of the workforce, enviro rating on the buildings, etc. Half the time I had to include a small fee too.

5. In the no new taxes era

You have to pay more fees. Makes sense.

12. If one is too cheap to pay permit fees

They’ll be doing little more than couch surfing. Fees are wonderful. The payer has to fund the government services they use, instead of reaching into my pockets via taxation to cover services I don’t use. Common sense solutions to funding shortages are always best.

13. You're missing the point

Why are these things permitted in the first place? What interest does government have interfering to this extent in private business? What benefit is derived? Is the level of benefit justified by the level of bureaucracy employed?

Not everything needs to be regulated and controlled. Many, many things are simply not the concern of government and are outside of it's reach.

If I receive lousy service from a place I do business with I'll just not go there again. Problem solved, no permit or regulation necessary.

7. Damn, def_con5, That was the LAST thing I worried about

when I opened my first "business"!

My concern was with supply of my "product" being interfered with by other, um....."businessmen".
I also had to travel to another city for my "supply".
The local dealers were known to uh...….."dilute" the purity of their "wares".
I preferred to provide "pure" products to my college buddies!
