President Trump, as foretold by Shakespeare, Part Deux

Our extremely erudite colleague, imwithfred, quite rightly and brilliantly pointed out the similarities between Trump and King Lear, whose downfall was caused by his anger at his youngest daughter who refused to praise and flatter him sufficiently.

I have always thought that Trump resembled the speaker of these lines from A Midsummer Night’s Dream:

“I see their knavery. This is to make an ass of
me, to fright me, if they could.”

As with the lines from Lear, there is irony here due to the previous actions of Puck.

2. At least show some respect to imwithfred

His comparison of Trump to an old man desperately needing praise and flattery was spot on.

3. Dramatic irony depends

on the characters in the play knowing less than the audience. But tRump depends on fooling the audience, pulling the wool over their eyes. And tRump's audience wants to be fooled. They willingly, insistently suspend disbelief so they can keep up the pretense that tRump is working for them and not himself. This is tragedy, not comedy.
