1. Always.

For example, on a $20 meal, I tip $4.

2. Sorry, but I don't unless the order taker does something above and beyond

If I call in an order and all they do is hand it to me at the counter, I don't think there's any reason that they should get 15+%. If they do something extra to accommodate a request, sure I'll round up a bill a little.

I'm a great tipper when I dine in or sit at a bar, but not for take out. I'll also tip the delivery guy a ton. I tip for service and effort.

For people who do tip on takeout, do you tip for fast food? for counter service?

3. delivery, always. Pickup, sometimes.

I used to err on the side of "no" with pickup, but I've started when the place looks slammed and the staff seems overworked.

7. Sometimes I toss a dollar in the jar.

Unlike a sit down dinner, I don't bother doing any math. I'm sure anything in the tip jar at the end of the nigfht is appreciated but not expected.

I really didn't care, I mostly just wanted to reply on the new site. hahahaha

I do tip if it's curbside or delivered to my home or work.

17. Absolutely not for something I pickup.

I'm not taking up table space, the server's time to wait on me and refill my drink, nor am I dirtying dishes that have to be washed, so they're actually saving money on me. Preparing food is part of the kitchen's staff's job, and is included in the food price.

I always tip for delivery.

I get all kinds of perks, too. Usually some free soup, but once in a while I get to try an off-menu item, like the braised whitefish or lobster spring roll.

I tip very well for sit-down and delivery, but if I drive to pick it up and the server simply hands me my order, I don't tip.

It's too weird. I only did it when I was in Europe and trying to work out how much to give without offending stressed me out so much I developed a nervous twitch and a nasty rash. Never again!

23. Oh yes.

The IRS doesn't distinguish between meals served sitting down and meals provided for take out: They tax the service industry for tips based on total volume of sales. I give only the standard tip on takeout, however, - unless the individual ringing up my meal has does something above and beyond.

25. Nope, but I've pondered it some . . .

Who would I tip is the quandary . . the person at the till who takes my money, the person who fills my coffee mug, the cook who makes my meal, or the person who serves it to me?

Besides, people in takeout places get decent pay (minimum wage at least - over $10/hr here in Ontario), while waitresses in restaurants do not. The cooks, cashiers maitre d's (whatever) get much more than the waitresses do, so I have no problems tipping them.

I have mentioned to one of the people in my favorite beer store that he can get me 48 beers, and I don't tip him a dime, BUT - if I go on a night out I'll usually tip the waitress at least $1 for each beer - more as the night goes on (never figured out why though )

for dining - I don't have a hard and fast rule - depends on the service/food - give me shitty food/service I don't feel guilty leaving squat.

Another thing I've noticed in our fast food places, at least the large ones like McDonald's and Tim Hortons (Canada's version of Starbucks sorta) - people that handle the $$ are not allowed to handle the food.

29. Of course! Especially if you order from them regularly.

They get to know you & make sure your order is just the way you like it. No missing packets of dipping sauce, plenty of napkins, plus they're happy to see you when you get there.

35. I always use the same name, and I always tip for take out.

I want them to know me. I want them to get it right.

When I call into a restaurant, I'll pick up at the bar, so that the bartenders get to know me.

They get to know what my family orders. They get to know the variations. They get to know "no onions" on my wife's salad.

36. It depends

If it's set up for takeout and there's a counter to pick it up, not usually, though if there's a tip jar I might put in a dollar or two. But if a server or bartender has had to get involved, I tip a standard 15%-20%.

37. I tip 20% unless they really piss me off

Forget the drinks, get lost and arrive with cold food, or refuse to use the side door after being asked. That'll kibosh any tip.

Unless they do something really special. Quite frankly I think wages should be raised so tipping in general goes away.

45. Now I always do - 15 to 20 percent for delivery - 5 bucks minimum

Never used to - but after reading a bit about the topic, I feel strongly about doing it.

Pick up - never. I really resent it. When I was working in fast food as a teenager, we never got any tips, and never even considered it. I think it's crass and overboard.

46. Generally no. Occasionally some (5-10%) when the staffs are courteous and helpful.

Not when I pick up. If sit-down, I tip min 15% (unless the service is horrible) and 20-25% if the waiter/waitress is very good.

48. We don't do takeout often but when we do

if there's a jar I put a few bucks in it.

I worked at a coffee/dessert place about a hundred years ago. We made made the cappuccino and lattes and scooped ice cream etc. but it was all "counter service". We were paid minimum wage but we had the jar. Usually by the end of the shift each of us would have 8 to 12 dollars which at the time was enough to pick up a pretty decent meal on the way home.

If we hadn't had the jar I wouldn't have been eating very well.
