Women With Concealed Weapons On The Rise In El Paso County
More women in El Paso County are getting their concealed carry permits than ever before. According to the sheriff’s office, in 2005, 917 women in El Paso received permits. In 2013, records reveal
8,193 women had permits. That’s a jump of 793 percent.

Local NRA instructor Germaine Adams says the surge in numbers doesn’t surprise her. She’s the founder of the Rocky Mountain Tactical Ladies Shooting Club. "We call it a knitting club with guns, it’s kind of like what we think of ourselves,” said Adams. She taught several gun safety classes this year.

Several women 11 News spoke with also cited politics as an incentive for applying to get their concealed carry permit. According to Adams, “You don't know what will happen if someone passes a new law. Right now, I know what the laws are. I know what I can and can't do. So, I'll go ahead and get it. It may change in four years. It may change in three years. You know, whatever the legislature does."

1. Heh

The hatred of guns makes them want to pounce, but the special interests within are holding them back. Expect too many conflicting emotions for many replies. But I am sure that was what you expected.

4. It's good that they own and have some familiarity with their weapons.

I hope they also have somebody stressing the absolute necessity of situational/tactical awareness.

5. I'm sure my experience at the range is no different from y'all's

Over the years, it's become obvious that women's interest in gun ownership and shooting has been on the rise.

I've been shooting long enough to remember when you'd see women in the lobby with their husbands/boyfriends, but not so much in the lanes. Now there's hardly a trip to the range where there isn't a woman shooting - even during the day weekdays when I prefer to go.

And that's a good thing.

6. While I'm pretty much all for this, the question begs:

"Empowerment against what?"

What emerging threat is there? Or was it an existing threat?

7. "Empowerment against what?"

Real life is full of threats...and being prepared for them isn't fear.

8. Yeah, it is.

Doesn't make you a coward to prepare against threats. But the only reason to prepare against or avoid threats is because you are afraid that you could not otherwise handle them. Never said it was irrational.

Any self-realized adult can clearly see this. I'm the same. I've trained with guns, knives, hand to hand... mostly because it was fun, but also so that I felt I could handle threats that, yes, I would otherwise be afraid to face.

When someone becomes a grown-up, they can admit to their insecurities. Only children pretend they 'fear nothing'.

9. Not in my case anyway

I don't carry a weapon because I fear other people. I carry weapons because my personal safety is my responsiblity. And a weapon is no different then a first aid kit.......which I also have.
