Only in Alaska: Girl Shoots Grizzly Bear Before Prom

http://www.wideopenspaces.com/alaska-girl-shoots-grizzly-bear-prom/

Only in Alaska would it be a perfectly normal occurrence for a young woman to shoot a grizzly bear before going to the prom that night.

Last Saturday was prom night for the students at Kotzebue Middle High School in Alaska. However, it was also an opportunity for 15-year-old Cassidy Kramer to bag her first grizzly bear. Cassidy head out on her grizzly bear hunt along the Noatak River Saturday morning with her father and brother. It didn’t take them long to find bears, though most of them were sows with cubs.

They managed to find a legal bear after a few more hours of hunting. With just two shots from her rifle, Cassidy had bagged her first grizzly bear. After shooting the bear, the Kramer family quickly set about skinning and dressing the bear. They had to hurry to make it back home in time for her to make it to prom. According to Lance Kramer, Cassidy’s father: We had to get back fast, because it was 5:40 and prom was at 8. We got back at 7 and she went upstairs and took a quick shower and did her hair.

Fortunately, Cassidy arrived back home in time to change from her hunting clothes into a pink dress and make it to prom with her friends. Don’t worry, even though she was in a hurry to make it to prom that day, the bear will not go to waste. Her father stated that, in accordance with Eskimo custom, Cassidy will give her first bear to someone who needs its meat and hide; in this case, her grandmother.

1. Michigan doesn't have grizzlies

but, if they did this kind of thing would be done there. I grew up in a hunting community it was such a big thing that teachers let attendance slide when deer hunting season came around. One teacher my algebra teacher gave extra credit to students if they brought in a picture of any deer they got.

5. Lifelong archery hunter here.

When I was a little late for school they knew I was still hunting and seeing deer. If I didn't make it in till noon they just asked me how big he was.

So far I have taken ever game animal on this part of the earth, with the exception of the dall and desert bighorn, sheep with a bow.

I also hunt with a rifle, handgun, and black powder, but love my bows the most.

18. I have to ask...

How long did it take you to master the bow and arrow? My brother tried to teach me when I was a kid and I never could get the hang of it.

He used to tell me that he was going to video me trying to use a bow and arrow and pair it with the Benny Hill theme song and post it to You Tube. It would get a million hits.

93. archery is actually one of the original martial arts.

Master it??? Only to a point, few ever master archery totally.

I shoot for fun with traditional nonmechanical bows and wooden arrows. I hunt with compound bows and composite arrows. I've been shooting for over 50 years and it is something that I do almost every day for my alone time.

This is an art of eye hand coordination of doing the same thing in exactly the same way every time. Age and eyesight have a way of humbling any shooter, gun or bow. I now only pull a 50 Lb bow and not the 65 Lb that I used to. But the new bows store and utilize energy much more efficiently than bows did even 20 years ago so it all kind of evens out.

I can still hold ten arrows in a paper plate at 50 yards on a calm day and that is my distance limit while hunting and then only at a standing broadside target.

Being a successful archery hunter is something that takes strong self discipline and a well entrenched set of personal ethics. I have never wounded and/or lost an animal but I pass up shots that are marginal in any way..

My advice to any new shooter is to find a local club and hang out talking to the people who do who do shoot. They love to share their knowledge and help new shooters. It is a sport that is very equipment based and it is not cheap at the upper end of the equipment.

71% http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kotzebue,_Alaska of the population is Native American. Hunting for food and skins is a subsistence issue there and a way of life. Maybe being more civilized is understanding different cultures better.

42. If by civilized you mean "programmatically kill animals for consumption vs hunting" then yes

A huge plant filled with animals that never see the light of day or freedom, are fed steroids then systematically killed by a machine and wrapped into packages at your grocery store.

Vs.

A girl, following her traditions, shoots a wild animal and donates the meat to someone in need.

The first scenario is the one you celebrate as 'civilized" and the second you shun?

Seriously? Do you ever stop to think how silly your world view is before exposing it?

The poster never mentions race as far as I can see. I imagine the poster is against all hunting. That's what I took from it. And seeing as I'm rational and not into crying racism at everything, that's what I'm judging it on. Perhaps we can ask the poster? If they state that only Inuits are killers when they hunt then I guess we got us a case of racism.

Or it's just a silly disingenuous post not to be taken seriously. Ymmv.

94. The harvesting, killing, of the game animals is part of that culture and part of this story.

There is no way in heaven or hell that you can maintain that degrading the killing of that bear within the context of this post is not an attack on the native american culture of that people.

What makes it OK to attack this culture while at the same time forbidding the use any of the adopted "code" words that the left is trying to make racist?

Words, have meaning. Killing the game is what is called for within their belief system, and killing is what was ridiculed by a racist.....

It is kind of hard to escape that one and we did not even have to adopt or change the meaning of a word to get there.

I can and do. I'll take the poster's words as is and not try to insinuate absurd notions of racism.

What makes it OK to attack this culture while at the same time forbidding the use any of the adopted "code" words that the left is trying to make racist?

Please link to post I forbid anything.

Yes, words do have meaning. That's why it's silly to infer racism in the post as ethnicity was not mentioned.

Some people sure are obsessed with finding racism around every corner around here. It's very odd....

Those who live in Alaska can be as easily the butt of jokes as those from Florida, Arkansas, Chicago, or anywhere else...Yeah, you can pray to their 'culture' of rushing off to prom after shooting a bear or caribou, and swinging by granny's house to throw their prize on her lawn if that is where you find your great spirit...I haven't lost my freedom to state if I think it is cool, stupid, or criminal....

Does not mean she kicked it off the tailgate as they drove by. Processing an animal takes time and does not have to be done right after the kill. They skinned it and gutted it to cool it down, after that it could hang for a few days or dad and bro could have been cutting it up while she went to prom.
Btw bear is great stuff I highly recommend it.

Not sure what that means but if the Palin kids were doing porn it would be all over The View and the Rachel Mad Cow show

68. It looks like you need some

cultural diversity training......

Or is it that you believe that you live in the only acceptable culture?
What other cultures do you talk down about?
Inclusion? Tolerance? Diversity? And a bunch of other lib code words you just trashed..... You must be so proud.
It is amazing the true and very intolerant nature of liberals come out when they get on their progressive "better than everyone else" high horse and speak openly and honestly.
This is a story about a strong young lady who is successful outside of many discriminatory stereotypes and practicing some aspects of her minority cultural norms. Isn't this something the liberals are supposed to at least pretend to value?

What is really funny here is that most natives in alaska vote democrat so you are making fun of one of your own.......

Slowly the minorities in this nation are learning that the democrats do not represent them or their best interests, and never have.

The insults are in plain print for all to see...... Where is the honor of those who degraded this Native American young lady? Do they have honor??? We are still waiting.

My Dad and I would make it every single day when my Mom and sister would go visit family.

Longhorn Steakhouses used to have liver and onions, all you can eat at lunchtime, and I took advantage of it regularly. Servers would wince, and I would be just happy as a clam.

And a bit rich for my tastes, i prefer Elk, or venison as they are much leaner.. But bear makes for an incredibly good stew on a cold night. Had a friend that made some bear meat tamales with a rich and piquant seasoning.. OMG so good.

To each their own I find beef and chicken very bland and flavorless...

ETA why does taking pictures bother you? I could see if they killed the animal just for the trophy / photo op but this girl is clearly not doing that.

Her grandma is going to eat the bear and likely use the hide for clothing or a blanket for warmth.

that ain't trophy hunting.

35. There is a lot of ignorance in this thread

in regards to the Native Americans' way of life in Alaska.

It is subsistance living. Everyone spends a lot of time hunting and fishing to prepare for the long winter ahead. Food is shared with those who have not had a successful season, as well as those who cannot hunt or fish for themselves any more. People take care of one another there. This is also true for the white people.

And a guy was hunting a black bear. He shot it and I could hear the sounds of the bear dying. It was terrible.

I'm not saying this to condem her. Just illustrating why I don't hunt. I tried it before, too. Went turkey hunting & duck hunting. And I fish all the time. But something about listening to that bear was just awful. I'm a bit of a softy, I guess. And I have the luxury of buying my meat at the store.

36. I understand that feeling.

The first time that I remember helping to raise and then kill a cow for the meat was the hardest for me. I fed that cow every day, and my Nanny told me not to think about the cow, but I was about 12, so you can't disassociate. Anyway, the cow was slaughtered and we had meat for the year(you can get about 500-600 lbs of meat off of one cow). So we were eating dinner one night, and my pop asked me how the cow was. It was in that moment I realized it was the cow that I had helped take care of...It took me awhile to eat meat again, but I did. I make sure that my child knows where meat comes from. That an animal died so that he could have that hamburger or piece of bacon.

one of the first things I tell them is when you shoot an animal you give it at least a half hour to lay down, stiffen up and bleed out. I bluntly tell them they do not want to push a wounded animal up and out and then don't want to be there to watch it die.

37. Hunting is a way of life for some.

I think it's important for people to know where meat comes from. A lot of people can disconnect and not think about it when all they see are the trays of meat at the supermarket. I have made sure that my son knows where meat comes from. An animal dies for us to eat meat. I respect people that don't eat meat. That is their course in life. We eat meat, but I do consider it my responsibility to show my child where his food comes from.

105. I look at is as more of the realization of the contrast of cultures that they live in.

it is kind of hard to feel if you have not lived it. it is normal that the children who live in a bicultural situation value both cultures highly. it is not a One or the Other thing, both are part of their lives. as parents it is our job to make sure that our children know and value where they came from.
when you just think of yourself as being just one race, white, black, or hispanic, how you think about your ancestors is much easier. when you are of mixed blood and have lived in both cultures it is a little more complicated.
