watching various military parades in anticipation for the big one tomorrow

The ones with red coats and bagpipes appear to be the most aesthetic.

The ones from Russia impress with their sheer size.

The ones from Chile and Sweden look the sharpest.

The ones from Israel are the most stirring, the most inspirational.

The ones of the French Foreign Legion don't do justice to their glorious history.

Does anyone know why the sailors of the German navy, when marching with other military, carry lit torches?

2. Der Grosser Zapfenstreick

The Gro├čer Zapfenstreich ("Grand Tattoo") is a military ceremony performed in Germany and ... two platoons of armed infantrymen, and two lines of soldiers carrying torches, in total about 400 men. ... The Zapfenstreich was a trumpet signal to end the selling of liquor in the military quarters and to prepare for lights out.
