They should rename Binaca Tanaka

His splitter can neutralize anything, including the germs that cause bad breath. He's now 6-0 with a 2.17 ERA and has only walked 7 batter in 58 innings. I don't fully understand how PECOTA projections are calculated, but according to whatever arcane formula is used, Tanaka was only expected to go 11-8 and throw 160 innings. I suppose that could still happen, but that doesn't appear likely.

1. Do they factor in his coming from the Japanese Leagues?...

The commentators keep jabbering about the differences between there and here, which of course do exist. But you don't go undefeated for as long as he has w/o kinda knowing how to pitch.

Nice to see him get his first MLB hit off Jose Valverde. No stylin' for him last night.

2. I'm not sure if they do, but I doubt it.

And yes, I definitely agree with you on Tanaka. To go 24-0 w/ a 1.27 ERA as Tanaka did last season in the NPB is an astonishing feat at any level. Experts rate the NPB at AAA+ in terms of player quality and ability compared to MLB, so the differences aren't that extreme. He's definitely not "out of his league" in the MLB, that's for sure.

3. Any yankee pitcher who can throw them past the mets has got to be

something special

Yeah, though: he's good.
