Masahiro Tanaka suffers first loss as Yankees fall to lowly Cubs at Wrigley Field

CHICAGO — Masahiro Tanaka is human after all.

The Yankees’ remarkable rookie suffered the first defeat of his big-league career — and his first regular-season loss anywhere in the past 21 months — as the Cubs handed the Yankees a 6-1 loss Tuesday night to open their abbreviated two-game series at Wrigley Field.

Tanaka allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings, taking his first regular-season loss since Aug. 19, 2012, with the Rakuten Golden Eagles. He struck out seven and walked one, but it wasn’t enough to overcome some timely hitting by the Cubs.

That ended the righthander’s unbeaten stretch of 42 consecutive starts in Japan’s Pacific League and the majors that saw him go 34-0, including a 6-0 start to his Yankees career.

“I’m a little bit disappointed because I think a lot of the fans were looking for me to keep on winning,” Tanaka (6-1) said through his translator. “Next time out, I’ll try to get a win again and keep it going again.”

Jason Hammel (5-2) held the Yankees to one run over 5.2 innings, while the Bombers managed only six hits all night, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

“A lot of things have to go right to have such a long winning streak,” Joe Girardi said. “Sometimes your offense is going to pick you up a little bit. We just didn’t do it tonight.”
