The North Pole Is Mysteriously Moving, and The U.S. Government Finally Caught Up

Sarah Kaplan 2 hrs ago

Magnetic north is not where it used to be.

Since 2015, the place to which a compass points has been sprinting toward Siberia at a pace of more than 30 miles a year. And this week, after a delay caused by the month-long partial government shutdown in the United States, humans have finally caught up.

Scientists on Monday released an emergency update to the World Magnetic Model, which cellphone GPS systems and military navigators use to orient themselves. It’s a minor change for most of us — noticeable only to people who are attempting to navigate very precisely very close to the Arctic.

But the north magnetic pole’s inexorable drift suggests that something strange — and potentially powerful — is taking place deep within Earth. Only by tracking it, said University of Leeds geophysicist Phil Livermore, can scientists hope to understand what’s going on.

The planet’s magnetic field is generated nearly 2,000 miles beneath our feet, in the swirling, spinning ball of molten metal that forms Earth’s core. Changes in that underground flow can alter Earth’s magnetic field lines — and the poles where they converge. Consequently, magnetic north doesn’t align with geographic north (the end point of Earth’s rotational axis), and it’s constantly on the move. Records of ancient magnetic fields from extremely old rocks show that the poles can even flip — an event that has occurred an average of three times every million years.

1. If they flip

It's pretty much an extinction event.

2. No.

It takes thousands of years for the poles to reverse.
The worst part of the flipping poles is the weakening field but that doesn't mean and extinction event.

3. Fake News

GPS Navigation has NOTHING to do with magnetism

4. It says cell phone GPS.

It says it's based off the world magnetic model.

For example, WMM is pre-installed in Android and iOS devices to correct for the magnetic declination.

6. Compass app?

Who said anything about a compass app?

It says cell phone GPS.

I even linked the information about the model they had to adjust with an excerpt for you that says it is programmed into cell phones.
That is what needed to be adjusted.

Anyway. No use. I see you aren't interested in learning about it. Just cry fake news because you got the info wrong.

8. I'll say it too.

CELL GPS!!!
as in positioning using cells.
You do know what cells are right? Not the phones that use them. The cells themselves.

It's not the same as satellite GPS.
Satellite isn't the only type of GPS.

Get it?

Geez, do some research!

10. The WMM is programmed into cell phones.

It takes into account for variations in declination. It's usually updated every 5 years, but due to the recent movement they had to fix it faster to.maintain accuracy in...
Wait for it. .

CELL GPS.

Do some research indeed.

12. I didn't quote fake news.

Look up magnetic declination.
Look up the world magnetic model.
Then look up why the WMM is programmed into cell phones.
Then look up why the WMM had to be updated ahead of schedule.

If you are using a cell based GPS to navigate, wouldn't you want it pointing as close to magnetic north as possible?
Well, without the update, you'd be going off course quite a bit.
It's real simple.
For most people.

Saying "fake news" isn't an argument.
Saying do some research and not doing it yourself just makes you look bad.

13. I couldn't care less what magnetic north is when using a GPS

True north and magnetic north are two different things. In addition to this, another variation occurs depending on your specific location. The two are called magnetic variation and magnetic deviation. If you are navigating with a magnetic compass, you need to factor in both in order to accurately fly or sail a route.

If you are using GPS, the satellites have no idea what your local variations and deviations are. The idea is to get from point A to point B. Worrying about magnetic heading when you are using a GPS is like using an abacus when you have a calculator.

14. It's for cell gps.

Nothing to do with satellite gps.

"True north and magnetic north are 2 different things." Yes.. that's what declination is.
If it's not updated you won't be going true north when navigating..

Maybe you don't care if your navigation equipment is off. People that rely on it do care.
Not talking about Google maps here and driving through a city GPS.

That's why they updated it earlier than they were supposed to because it would throw everything off.
If you are using cell GPS to navigate in the dark, i think you'd want it to be as accurate as possible. The correction had to be done for this reason.
There is nothing fake about it.

15. You will NEVER admit you are wrong

Cell phones use satellites and/or cell towers (which have GPS locations)

16. Right and unless the WMM is updated to reflect the new declination

You won't be going true north when navigating.

Is it really that hard for you to understand?
