The Worlds First Solar-Powered Hydrogen Refuelling Station Inaugurated in Mariestad, Sweden (58 N)



Mariestad municipality is the first in the world to open an off-grid solar-powered hydrogen producing and filling station. On May 28, the filling station was inaugurated.

Many talk about the future fossil-free society with high-tech off-grid solutions for self-sufficient energy systems, reduced vulnerability, increased IT security, with a faithful supplier delivering every day – the sun. På ett gärde intill E20 utanför Mariestad ligger någonting unikt: Den första tankstationen i världen där vätgas tillverkas på plats och där vem som helst kan tanka. Om man har en bil som drivs av en bränslecell förstås – men de är inte många. Inte än i alla fall.

Nio kronor hektot kostar vätgasen. En full tank går löst på drygt 500 kronor och på den kan en bränslecellsbil köras upp emot 70 mil. I dagsläget är 8 av kommunens drygt 150 bilar av rätt typ – i praktiken elbilar där batterierna ersatts av en vätgastank och en bränslecell (se faktaruta)...

(Nine kronor hectare costs the hydrogen gas. A full tank runs loosely over SEK 500 and on it a fuel cell car can be driven up to 70 miles. At present, 8 of the municipality's over 150 cars are of the right type - in practice electric cars where the batteries have been replaced by a hydrogen gas tank and a fuel cell (see fact box))

1. That's actually pretty cool

but:

That means that I'd have to stop 15 times to refuel on a 1,000 mile trip and just hope there is a fueling station nearby when I hit that 70 mile mark. Also, those panels sure take up a lot of land. Hopefully one doesn't have to travel more than 70 miles to get enough land for those panels.

How much heat do those panels absorb/retain -- If we were to cover enough land to produce Hydrogen using solar then wouldn't that add to globull warming? Not to mention the destruction of habitat and the manpower to keep those panels working at top efficiency.

Overall, I like the idea but it is just not feasible in its current state. Maybe in the future when technology catches up but for now it's just for show and another way to fleece taxpayers..

2. That's a misprint or a mis-translation

A full tank (~5 Kilograms Hydrogen) on a Toyota Hydrogen Electric Mirai will move the vehicle >300 miles

A full tank on a Honda Hydrogen Electric Clarity (~5 Kilograms) will move the vehicle ~350 Miles

A full tank on a Hyundai Hydrogen Nexo (~6 Kg) will move the vehicle >360 miles

Wouldn't having open land covered by dark panels retain heat just like the heat sinks that are large cities?

I still wonder about the destruction of habitat? I've seen the damage wind farms do to the landscape/habitat and believe the windmills are much more friendly to the land, after initial damage due to construction. I know from experience that the area around my solar panels is much warmer than the rest of the roof. I also know that dark road surfaces are much hotter and retain heat much more that grass or dirt.

Overall it may be great for the future but right now buying a car for $60K+, being limited to where one can go, being confined to metro areas/interstates, having to plan trips to ensure a rare fill-up station is always within range (no side trips unless planned) and driving a zeppelin down the road just doesn't do it for me.

Interesting technology but I just don't see it working in a country as vast as the USA. Small countries where driving isn't such a pastime might be fine.

6. I can almost see it working for trucks and more likely even trains

They both can haul large amounts of fuel and are mostly driven on interstates and train tracks where fuel could (inthe future) be more accessible. Trains are already electromotive and trucks are small trains on wheels and can probably be modified if one could afford the $$$$ to do so.

Have you ever seen a truck catch fire in and accident? At least diesel burns slowly and only explodes due to compression (its an oil). Hydrogen is explosive so you'll have bombs on wheels carrying hundred of gallons of Hydrogen. I sure wouldn't want to be near by if a malfunction/accident occurred.

What are your thoughts on the exhaust in cold climates? Wouldn't the water turn to ice and create more danger for innocent drivers? Nitpicking, probably.

7. You'd have to know what a solar panels albedo is.

Apparently it's around 30%, the same as earth's average. Asphalt roads and shingles have a "worse" albedo than solar panels. Covering your asphalt roof with solar panels would actually be better as their albedo is greater, meaning they reflect/reject the thermal energy back out at a higher percentage. So for every kJ of thermal energy it receives from the sun, it reflects 300 J back out. The other 700 joules would be stored as heat or converted to electricity, which also is converted to thermal, electrical and mechanical energy, which also produces heat as it's used.

3. Quick check finds SEK 500 equals US$52.98950...

...which makes sense with all their taxes there to pay for that FREE healthcare, college, etc.
