Upgraded Large Hadron Collider Could Go Beyond Higgs To Dark Matter And Supersymmetric Particle

The newly revved-up Large Hadron Collider could discover a particle that’s even more exciting than the Higgs boson this year – the first supersymmetric particle.

The particle accelerator has been shut down for the last two years while scientists, engineers and technicians work on upping the power by 60 per cent, from 8 trillion electron volts (teraelectronvolt or TeV) to 13 TeV.

CERN researchers are hoping to turn the power back on at the collider at the end of March, when the accelerator will be capable of smashing particles together at 6.5 TeV per beam, instead of 4 TeV.

The surge of power will allow scientists working on the range of experiments at CERN, including ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb, to confirm earlier discoveries by hopefully spotting more Higgs in action and find new particles that may answer questions about what’s beyond the Standard Model of Physics.

1. Been hoping all of my adult life for a crack in the Standard Model

We can only cross our fingers and wish that CERN finds such... but wishing isn't science as I'm sure you know. My guess if I had to place money would be that they find nothing...

2. On a scale,

how would the standard model compare to the speed of light? How outrageous would it be to find what they're looking for?

3. Well not that outragous actually ...

Everybody knows there is a crack in the Standard Model somewhere but we only have brief hints about what and where it might be found.

It would be much less surprising than finding a speed of light violating experiment for example.

Post any good articles you know of. Whatever they find this will be very cool to follow. 60% is a huge boost to an already brute force machine.

5. I'll keep you updated

What I know is what I learned in graduate school (I have a Ph.D. in experimental physics.) The expectation was that there was a huge dessert up above the energy of the Higgs for several orders of magnitude until we reach the GUT scale. Unfortunately, colliders with energies approaching that scale would require accelerators the size of the Earth or more. I think we may have to look to cosmology for hints instead.

Yeah, fascinating stuff!

7. PS... Are they just playing everyone

saying they found the Higgs Boson? Did they figure it's a Jennifer Lopez world and people are too dumb to notice? I took that as a Kardashian play. "Hey everyone, we found multiple universes. Cool!"

Please tell me I'm wrong.

8. No - I'd say the "discovery" of the Higgs

was perhaps the most carefully verified discovery in scientific history. Fermilab in the US was seeing it but not enough to call it a discovery. Two groups at CERN independently discovered it after waiting until 6 sigma of uncertainty which is a 99.99966% confidence in the result times 2+...
