Center-fire vs rim-fire

Last edited Mon Jan 28, 2019, 05:30 PM - Edit history (1)

I'm trying to figure out why the left wants raise the legal purchase age on center-fire rifles but not rim-fire.

Is center-fire more dangerous, lethal, etc.

Or just more ignorance? Usually they don't know crap about firearms.

2. On some level, because they know rimfire can not be reloaded, centerfire is low hanging fruit.

3. The most powerful rimfire in common use is the .22 Magnum

Of course they are still powerful enough to kill humans. The .22 Short was used in silencer-equipped pistols by the OSS in WW II.

5. I still have some old .22 short.

Have you ever fired one? They are pretty silent already.

6. I grew up on a farm, and shorts were what my dad would buy

He had an old Winchester single-shot that I learned to hunt with.

For small game you should never need to fire more than one shot with anything more powerful than a .22 short. Stalking and marksmanship are the key.

7. He set a fine example.

It took me many years before I really came to appreciate that simple concept. But these days .22 short is a thing of the past because .22 LR is cheaper. I might buy a box of them though, because I'm thinking that would be good to help get the young ones started shooting. Not enough noise to scare the most squeamish ones, you see.

9. Back then, shorts were about 50 cents / box of 50. LRs were maybe double that

The 1 cent per round back then would be equivalent to maybe on the order of 20 cents per round in our inflated money.

4. Centerfire tends to be a more powerful round.

There are rimfire cartridges more powerful than your common .22 but it's not something you see every day.

12. Thanks New Deal

So great for bears, but doesn't do much for humans. I presume a rim-fire round fired out of a rifle could kill a human.

13. A rim-fire round fired out of a pistol can kill a human as well... same round.

8. Sounds like they're trying to ban the larger caliber rifles...

Rimfires are usually .22cal.

10. depends....

From the perspective of someone who understand firearms...

- This can lead to ultimate control over ammunition.

My guess is that lefty thinks rimfire=less powerful.
Of course you and I know, .50cal rounds could be manufactured as rimfire to get around this.
However, it kills the reloading option for the general public, allowing lefty to completely control who gets ammo and how much of it since rimfire brass cannot be reloaded
But I doubt the communists are this smart... they just think we would all be limited to .22LR or something. But there's more potential for evil when you start looking at the technical possibilities underlying.

11. Got the story wrong

They are not trying to ban, they want to raise the legal purchase age.

I will correct.

14. Just like MADD doesn't want to ban drinking.

But the truth is, they do.

15. I agree with you

But the bill introduced in the house raises the age.

16. Just like MADD did by even more devious means to raise the drinking age to 21.

MADD successfully lobbied to deny federal highway funding to any state that did not raise the legal drinking age to 21. Every single state complied. Having been drafted into military service when not yet old enough to vote at that time, I am aware of this tyranny. If we are old enough to fight and die for our country, particularly if it is not our idea to do so, then we are also old enough to be treated as adults in every other respect with no exceptions.

In 1971 the 26th Amendment gave 18 year olds the right to vote. Developments since then have eroded this justice. 18 year olds should be treated exactly the same in every respect as the rest of us who are 21 and older. If you don't like that idea, then let's not allow these irresponsible youths to serve in the military until they are 21.

ETA: For those who want to ban firearms, raising the legal purchase age is simply a step in the right direction from their point of view.
