Does anyone here have experience with "dynamic cruise control"? I love it. But...

My Wife's Toyota Highlander (2017) has dynamic cruise control. Set it for 70 mph, and if you come up on a car that's going slower than you, it slows the car and matches the speed of the one you're following. It'll slow all the way down to 30 mph if the situation warrants before the cruise control kicks off. When the car in front moves out of your way, it gently accelerates back to the originally set 70 mph. You can even change the distance the car keeps between you and the slower car.

I like it. But...

When I drive vehicles that DON'T have it, I forget that my vehicle WON'T slow down, and I've wound up having a split-second of panic when I realize I'm about to drive up someone's ass. Done that a few times.

5. I'm not a tailgater, never have been... so my panic moment happens with plenty of room to spare.

I wonder though how long it'll be before someone going from dynamic cruise control to regular control blames a deadly rear-ender on the complacency this system instills. Actually, I bet it's happened already.

I like the system, but one thing I WON'T do is give up my steering wheel.

9. It may be an Urban Legend but

Somebody told me about a Mother who put her Minivan in "Cruise Control" and turned around to spank her misbehaving Kids!

I'd like to think its true

12. I remember reading about a guy in a new RV that got on a interstate hwy,

set the cruise control, and went to take a leak.

2. Im a truck driver and the company I work for has this

On their trucks, it’s annoying as fuck when you’re going around a tight bend and a car in the opposing lane is coming around the outside part of the curve and the radar thingy makes the brakes slam. Oh and if that happens it send a “critical event” message and you have to explain what happened.

I have a car without that feature never had a problem

3. I live in the mountains and this cruise control doesn't do that. I don't know how it differentiates

between oncoming traffic and traffic going in my direction.

4. In my truck there is a radar emitter on my bumper

And I guess if something is moving in from of you it can’t tell if the car in the curve I discribed is coming at you. I’ve gotten several critical events from assholes stopping in the EZpass lanes on the NJ turnpike

8. Agreed. I have a CDL. Used to drive for CRST, then KLLM.

I don't see how trucks could ever be automated like cars, and am very suspicious of whether cars can ever successfully be automated in the first place. Too many variables.

15. This is why I won't even own a car with an automatic transmission

Call me a control freak but I want to be in full control of the vehicles I drive.

10. I don't have it now,

but may with an optional package on the car I'm ordering in May. I rarely use cruise. I don't think I've ever used it on the car I have now. I like the feel of control. I challenge myself to see if I can make it downhill on 40 at Black Mountain by downshifting, never using the brake. My husband did like it on his Legacy.

11. I have it in one of my vehicles.

It's great for long trips. I wish I could buy an autonomous self driving car.
