1. Grumman S-2 Tracker

"50's era ASW (Anti Submarine Warfare) platform that served with the Navy until the mid 70's. Replaced by the S-3 Viking. Carried torpedo's, depth charges, or mines. Was exported to a lot of our allies over the years and is still in use in South America.

2. That there's a Grumman S-2.

Once an anti-submarine plane. The last one I saw in the 80s was used for COD or Carrier Onboard Delivery. Mail and airplane parts. What a freaking racket those radial engines made!

3. VRC-40 was in the Hangar next to us in Norfolk

Whenever they launched one they had to “warm up” the engines and check the Prop Pitch etc

Sounded like someone kick started a Harley

4. That had to be great...

I've heard B-17s and a C-123 at the airshow.

Belching fire and smoke at startup!

5. When they were checking the props was cool

They could make it sound like a Buzz Saw then reverse the pitch and make it sound like Paddles slapping the Air, Whap-Whap-Whap!

I was a young Airman Deuce but stuff like that was why I chose Naval Air

Made you think of the Olden Days

7. Makes me realize

I’m starting to be a bit of a geezer

I saw that with my own two eyeballs

I also witnessed the last takeoff of a Photo-Recon
F-8
