Why was it shaped like an "L"?

A few months ago, while researching possible means for President Trump to use once he gets his Revolution up and going, instilling terror in all those who hate America, I inquired about why the slanted shape of the blade used in the guillotine. I got very illuminating and useful information, but now feel compelled to inquire of technology-savvy members once again.

Before the guillotine, the axe and sometimes the sword was used to behead traitors and malcontents.

That wouldn't be as speedy or efficient for eliminating traitors and malcontents, but at the same time it wouldn't be efficient and cost-effective to have a guillotine located in every village and town, where the number of primitives are much fewer. An axe kept on hand would do just as good a service, for the six or half a dozen rural primitives.

Now, tinypic.com has gone out of business, and so I have nothing I can post showing the shape of the axe used in beheadments before the guillotine. Anyway, the axe was usually a large upside-down "L" shaped blade with kind of a hook at the foot of the "L."

Why would it be shaped like that, instead of like a regular axe?

1. the headsman used a tool designed for battle rather than specific to executions

think of the hook as a can opener for fighting armored knights.

the fleur de lis served a similar purpose on a spear head.

and fred, for clarification, the brutal dictator is usyally on the receiving end of a guillotine. that is what makes it a "revolution."

3. So Righty, the people who are offended ...

at being called deplorables. The same Righty who takes issues with the left's constant lecturing and know-it-all-ness. The Righty who wants to censor Facebook, Twitter, Google and the rest for being mean to conservatives. That Righty...is I'm sure on-board with Fred Jr's plea for a civil war and killing fellow Americans for "crimes" like being a malcontent.

Well, there's that and the fact that you've now given KittyKatIdiot some fresh words for OPs to post, delete, post, delete, post, delete --- repeat, repeat, repeat.

5. ??????

Are you saying you guys don't live in a perpetual state of offended? Do you comb through the OPs on DI?

And sorry, I won't take your advice on "stool reducers", what ever you're taking doesn't seem to work too well.

If it’s good enough for ISIS...

8. ".....Why not just use a machete?....."

That's a barbarous way to put someone out of his misery; I dunno for sure, but I'm guessing one has to hack, rather than cut, off the topper.

The guillotine is best, the most humane and civilized, but we can't afford to erect a guillotine everywhere there are primitives, and an axe is at least second best.

10. I believe it had something to do with added mass.

Once the mass obtained momentum, it increased the chances of a clean cut.
It was bad form for the executioner to have to use more than one stroke to remove the head.
