Electric leak?

My electricity usage is way up in August/September 40 %. I checked average local temps, not much change +1 September, -1 August Thermostat the same (78 in summer, 65 in winter). Haven't bought any appliances.

Only thing new my daughter bought a giant 50+ HD TV to play games with her friends. Probably in use 8+ hours a day. Do they suck up that much power?

Only other thing I can think of is an electric leak. Is there such a thing?

Thanks.

1. meters may go a few months between readings

in between they use averaging (or make something up) sometimes that may catch up all at once. solid state electronics is not normally that bad, but dirty a/c filters (or loose ducts in the attic) might be worse than you think.

3. Thanks

I should point out year over year usage. Sorry about the confusion.

9. Good point rampart

Your electric bill should indicate the number of days in the billing period. It is normal for your bills to deviate a couple of days from billing period to period. It's possible they skipped a reading or two and estimated your bill on the low side, and the next actual reading "caught up" to the low estimates. Look at the number of kilowatt-hours billed in the same Septembers of previous years.

2. Your new tv is probably costing you $1 if it's going 8 hrs each day.

I doubt that's an increase of 40%

6. That was $1/day...

Still, that's not much.

However, if your daughter has been home and you've been away during the day, there's a reasonable chance she's been cranking up the AC when you're gone.

5. that's so funny I have a solar panel ad on this page

I keep my thermostat the same as you! your new TV probably has some kind of energy star rating for average use..I have never heard of an electric leak. ask your kids if they are growing pot?

7. Do you have an old electrical box? Has the box gotten wet?

If so, could be a voltage leak from there. Rare but it does happen. I worry about that with mine all the time because they are old and need replaced.

I was going to ask if maybe someone had recently started a 'grow' operation in the basement but I didn't know if you'd take it for a joke or not.

8. Check a few things

Do you have duct work in your attic? Check to make sure a recent separation of the ducts has not occurred.

Have you noticed your A/C unit runs longer each time it cycles?

Try this......take a temperature measurement (before it gets cold) at your return air, and a measurement of the air temperature coming out a grille. There should be about an 18 degree difference. If it is less, (say 12 or 14 degrees) have your unit checked. Perhaps a Freon leak is affecting the performance.

14. Yeah, that's going to make it tough

You might not see another high bill until the months get hotter. Do you have gas or electric heat?

17. Sorry, been a busy time

It looks like my electric box is pretty rusted out. 30 years old. Goona see if the electric company will replace.

I think the ducts are okay, but I found a hole in the attic on my rear wall. So, I gotta get that repaired, I'll have the repair guy do a more detailed inspection. Thanks would hate to get snow, etc in the attic.

I haven't gotten new bill yet, so I don't know if I am still having a problem.

Still, no air conditioning test 35 tonite. Don't think it's gonna warm back up again.

I'll let you know what the next bill says.
