Idiots take their kid to the emergency room for a small cut on a finger, get billed $629

The case of the $629 Band-Aid — and what it reveals about American health care - Vox
https://apple.news/Am5j5EW6eQRaH-p8W__rY0Q

I have no sympathy for people this stupid. They wanted to use an ER instead of taking care of it themselves and then become shocked~! that ER work isn't cheap.

Assholes.

9. "Proper medical care"

for a small cut.

Someone else mentioned calling their pediatrician for advice.

They also could have called their respective parents, who, BTW, managed to raise THEM without killing them.

First time parents think they're the only ones in the world who have ever had kids. Unless their child has some sort of bleeding disorder, it's doubtful such a small injury would have amounted to much.

Oh, and they were also lucky to have been seen by a doctor within 20 minutes of arriving at the ER. Many of us with more serious issues have probably waited an hour...two...three (or more) in the ER.

3. What I don't understand, is why did they not call their pediatrician?

At that age, she had to have one. You can call after hours and get the answering service, and they can contact the doc on call. Or, if they could not do that, go to a walk in clinic.

6. How about those "idiots" that have been smoking for decades

and expect their COPD, Lung Cancer and Emphysema to be treated. This country spends more than 100 billion dollars every year treating these preventable diseases.

"I have no sympathy for people this stupid"

"Assholes"

7. Those folks are owed our thanks and appreciation.

They have been paying excessive taxes for many many years. They have paid their dues and the costs for their treatments when necessary.

11. All diseased smokers have paid excess taxes for years?

Let's see the stats for that. I can hardly wait for it.

14. My (late) SO

died as a result of COPD in 2008... He paid very high taxes all the years he worked and he worked until he was 66. He also paid the maximum SS every year. Can you say that?

15. The excuses smokers use to justify a death wish ....a detrimental, disease inducing habit

are so very sad.

"Can you say that? " -----Say what? Paid plenty in taxes? Yes indeed.

Will die because of a self induced death wish? Absolutely no way to that part. You seem proud of it. How horrifying

Each person treated for smoking related diseases can easily run up costs of more than $100,000.00 a year. Such a shameful waste of medical resources being used on something so easily preventable.

16. Well aren't you the prescient one?

You have no idea what will kill you, nor do you know whether it will be due to your own habits.

Yeah, smoking is all of those things however many people die of COPD having never smoked in their lives. For reasons that were still unexplained the last time I did any research on the subject, individuals of Scottish descent are more prone that others. My late SO was a Scot.

Tell me, what's your solution? Do we leave them untreated? How about drug users? Those with HIV? There are a host of diseases that result from behavior, do we send those afflicted to the wall? Do we use a blindfold or not? Do we bill their families for the bullet?

While smokers may be sad, I think you are a much sorrier specimen.

'Sorrier specimen' than smokers? Because I value my health and the health of my family? Well then, it's a good thing

I don't value your opinion

sorrier because you are so self-righteous and obviously not very self-aware.

I'm glad you're not in charge.

21. 629

The Europeans don't have this problem! Years ago I took my football(soccer) team to Denmark, and had to use the hospital four times! Those darn 12-year olds! Not a single bill, no questions, immediate attention! Their system is just great! Too bad we still live in the middle ages!
