CDC: This flu season worst since 2009 swine flu pandemic

Federal health officials warned Friday that this year's flu outbreak is more severe than any other since the 2009 swine flu pandemic, and that its intensity is still increasing.

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a phone call with reporters that the number of people experiencing flu-like symptoms is increasing. Hospitalizations for influenza are also rising.
What's more, flu activity has stayed at the same level nationwide for about three weeks, said Dr. Dan Jernigan, the director of the CDC’s Influenza Division. That sets it apart from many flu seasons, in which activity wanes in certain parts of the U.S.

"We often see different parts of the country 'light up' at different times, but for the past 3 weeks, the entire country has been experiencing lots of flu, all at the same time," he said.

1. Caught it in on a flight out of SF Cali earlier this month at the start of our vacation

From the couple seated in front of us for the flight, who brought a screaming sick infant on the flight. Got sick the last day of our vacation.
3 days of sore throat, then 2 days of feeling like it was over, then hammered with a week of grungy, groggy, stuffed up unpleasantness.

5. That's probably not the flu

That's a bad cold- if you'd caught the flu, especially this year's strain, you'd be in bed with a fever for a week, unable to do much besides sleep and use the bathroom, and, if you're lucky, eat, and then you'd still be pretty miserable for another week after that.

7. Doubt it.

"Unlike the common cold, flu symptoms hit suddenly — within a matter of hours. Symptoms include: fever, feverish chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and tiredness. Children with the flu could also vomit and have diarrhea"

2. Been lucky enough to avoid it so far.

About half the shop has been down with it though.

3. I wonder if curtailing interstate commerce for the length of the incubation period would help.

Stop truckers at state lines. If they're sick; quarantine them for the duration of the incubation period.

4. It aint truckers

Its travelers.
Truckers have very little contact with others over the course of their jobs. Most of their travel is isolated.
Compare that to the petri dish of an airliner packed to the gills with people.
