What if this is like when they rolled out DU 2.0?

Remember how there was an eventual migration but there were some who refused to migrate. Now, I know this situation isn't like that, but what if it becomes like that? What if this site actually ends up taking the place of DU, even if unintentionally? It could happen. It will be interesting to see how this evolves, and what happens to DU in the process.

Should this post be in the "Life" forum or somewhere else? Culture? Beliefs? Fun?

Maybe there should be a "DU" category?

1. I don't think DU has anything to worry about

After the buzz is gone, most folks will migrate back to the warm amniotic fluids of their respective echo chambers, whether left or right. As George Bernard Shaw said, "“Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty and the pig likes it.” After a few fiery weeks of pig wrestling, most will give up.

2. Maybe not.

Some may welcome the challenge?

12. That might actually make it easier to grow this place

People who like echo chambers are often pretty knee jerky - which doesn't make for really good discussions. I see a fair amount of that from both sides already. Perhaps after it stops being so new, and the migration back takes place, those of us left can have some good conversations!

3. I don't think this will replace DU.

Skinner has no intention of mothballing DU. He and the other admins just wanted to try something new.

I think it's a very cool concept.

4. I doubt it.

Though it is fun to visit DU2, seeing the few zombie posters still endlessly pushing around the same piles of dirt.

11. This is how they will handle name changes in the future

Enough complaints about people wanting to change their usernames and they start a new forum.

14. that was DU 3.0 or 4.0

DU 2.0 was way back in june 2003 or so.

Then it got changed several times as the "my posts" buttom became "my DU" and then the journal feature was added and rec was added and then unrec was added, and then later dropped and "block" was added where an OP could block somebody from posting any more in their threads and people had lists of blocked users. That one lasted only about a week until Elad added Skinner to his block list.

So I cannot remember if the current DU is 3.0 or 4.0, but I definitely remember the roll-out of 2.0. One thing that happened was that a bunch of the archives were lost, seemingly forever.

15. If this site replaced DU I would

be out of here pretty fast. There is just not enough here to hold my attention. I also think that there are some privacy issues on this site.

16. There is no "migration."

This is a way to reach out to the wingnuts, the Paulbots, the Libertarians, the "I hate Obama Club," the "Hillary Stinx Brigade" and other disaffected groups and individuals who find "Free Republic" just too wooden and frankly, stupid to bear.

It gives them a place to do battle without stinking up DU in the run up to a Democratic primary and general election.

Traffic here, traffic there, traffic, traffic everywhere. It's not a zero sum game.
