Contactless Visa!

Just saw an ad with some American football player at CVS using his contactless Visa. Great technological invention. MAGA. We’ve had this in Europe for 4-5 years.

1. Most of the patents on smartcard technology were held by the French and Germans

US networks run by Visa, Mastercard, etc. were unwilling to pay the royalties on European tech, so they stuck with the magnetic stripe card until the patents expired.

It's not unusual for technology to be delayed until patents expire if they cannot be worked around.

4. Countries or companies -- the incumbent tries to slow the advance of technology

The incumbent always has a lot of sunk cost invested in the existing technology. The incumbent wants to use it as long as possible and not deploy the upstart innovations until they are forced to.
