Culture shock - living in town .

Yeah - those paying attention know I have lived in the boonies over 6 years, but the house burnt down in January - and living in a small apartment in the town of 2,000 souls nearby ever since . . . .

FIRST thing I noticed (other than the normal town smells of diesel and gasoline) that displeased me was CIGARETTE BUTTS - EVERYWHERE!

I live on the ground floor of a two-storey apt building, a set of stairs leads to a deck for outside rear access to the building, I'm in the apt below that - SO - the Spring thaw shows that the upstairs gang throws their butts over the rail all winter, which is basically right outside my livingroom/bedroom windows . . . yeccccccccccchh!

Moving on - youth.

I enjoyed watching a young gang of kids play an informal game of hide/seek yesterday, but realized today as I watched a mother and her son walk to their car - the young lad (abut 9-10) was not carrying a baseball glove, or sporting cap guns/whatever as in yesteryear -

but yeah - an iPod and earbuds . . . . .

OH yeah - the constant noise - the Trans-Canada Hwy - our equivalent of an interstate passes thru this tiny town, y apt not 200 feet from it, and on a roundabout to boot - so I hear all the brakes, shifting up and down as the frustrated drivers navigate the only roundabout on the TC from coast to coast . . . . .

In the boonies, I could hear the snow fall . . . .

and oh yeah - the scenery out there is much better . . .

soon . . . . .

(sigh)

2. The first thing I noticed when I went to NYC and left La Guardia was the cigarette butts.

In NYC it seemed like every single crack in the sidewalk in the street was filled with them. That, and the smell of warm piss wafting up from the subway. We wanted to ride the subway just to "experience" it. When we went to the entrance in Times Square we looked at each other, laughed, and walked the other way.
