Quote for the day.

Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky, who watches everything you do, every minute of every day.
And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!
But He loves you.
He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money!

It's your right to believe whatever you want.
As it is my right to mock whatever I want.

My wife's stepfather is an Indian too.
75% percent.
He was treated incredibly horribly by catholic schools in Canada.
Beaten and starved, stripped of his culture, clothing, religion and language.
He is spiritual but you'll never see him in a church. He follows his traditional religion now, what's left of it.
There is currently a large lawsuit pending to compensate what the Catholics did to them, but the Catholic Church isn't going to have to pay for it. The taxpayers in Canada will have to shell that money out.

What difference does it make WHY they were beaten and starved and stripped of everything, the attempt to erase their entire identity by the church?

11. Maybe you need to read more carefully.

I mentioned it happened in Canada earlier.
It happened in Canada, but it was done by the church.
Canada took responsibility for the actions of the church.

My wife is a french Canadian from Quebec.
She's white, but her stepfather is an Indian and told me horrible stories about being taken from his family and placed in residential schools and all the shit they did to them during those times.
It really isn't funny. I'm not offended that you find it funny. You can laugh at whatever you want, just doesn't look good on you, claiming to be an Indian, laughing at what happened to other Indians at the hands of the church.

13. I read just fine it seems you are the one who don't seem to understand,

Back In the 1700s, many of my people left New York and withdrew into Southeastern Canada and Today the Mohawk population is spread throughout much of New York ( The Mohawk Valley where I reside and have a very successful business ) and in Canada some of the Indians lived on reservations and some lived in the general population. We have heard stories over the years about the Canadians treating our people like crap but nothing as far as I know has ever been verified to any extent.

The Haudenosaunee were made up of five nations, the Mohawk, the Oneida, the Cayuga, the Onondaga, and the Seneca, we all have heard the stories but nothing has ever been verified to our knowledge, my wife and my oldest daughter are Historians so to speak and have many times looked into these allegations and never could verify any of it. It happened. I saw the scars on several people that were beaten by nuns for simply getting caught speaking their language to each other.
I've heard stories from several elders that were subject to the abuse.
They aren't making it up, it's been verified.

15. Here's a snippet.

Residential schools were established with the assumption that aboriginal culture was unable to adapt to a rapidly modernizing society. It was believed that native children could be successful if they assimilated into mainstream Canadian society by adopting Christianity and speaking English or French. Students were discouraged from speaking their first language or practising native traditions. If they were caught, they would experience severe punishment.

Throughout the years, students lived in substandard conditions and endured physical and emotional abuse. There have also been convictions of sexual abuse. Students at residential schools rarely had opportunities to see examples of normal family life. Most were in school 10 months a year, away from their parents; some stayed all year round. All correspondence from the children was written in English, which many parents couldn't read. Brothers and sisters at the same school rarely saw each other, as all activities were segregated by gender.

According to documents obtained by the CBC, some schools carried out nutritional experiments on malnourished students in the 1940s and '50s with the federal government's knowledge.

When students returned to the reserve, they often found they didn't belong. They didn't have the skills to help their parents, and became ashamed of their native heritage. The skills taught at the schools were generally substandard; many found it hard to function in an urban setting. The aims of assimilation meant devastation for those who were subjected to years of abuse.

About our History, but more times than not we have found many of the so called experts wrong in their opinions. Yes we laugh at those who think they know what we are about when in fact they know nothing, we as a people have moved on, our anger has subsided many years ago and hold no ill will what so ever.
To those who try and have those old feelings of anger resurface among people have a rude awakening for themselves, it will no longer work, we as a people have moved on.

In Quebec, with my wife and her family. We drive up from NY state.
Her stepfather makes wigwams, longhouses and birchbark canoes.
Drumming, singing and dancing, traditional food, sweat lodges. It's a great time.

What does that have to do with the abuse they endured by the catholics in charge of the of residential schools?

I refuse to hold the whole Church responsible for who committed those acts, there is good and bad in every walk of life and it is time for those to let the past go and learn from those atrocities, that is why in our view History I so important, unlike some in this Country who believes in hiding History is the way to go.

Probably not.

You can refuse to hold the church responsible if you want. You'd be dead wrong.
It was nuns and priests abusing the fuck out of these children all over the country. Not "Canadians".
Most Canadians probably didn't even know what was going on until it got exposed.
When Indian Affairs would show up they'd all be treated well, with better food and nobody getting their asses kicked, but as soon as they left, it was back to normal.
It's not like they advertised it. They hid it and continued to abuse the children.

We learned a long time ago how to laugh at many things and continue to do so to this day , the Graves that you are discussing were found back in 2011 I believe and I absolutely agree it was an atrocity, but I still refuse to condemn the whole Church for the actions of those animals. I will never do what lefty does and that is to condem a whole portion of society for the actions of a few.

41. I never mentioned anything about graves.

You did.

Telling victims to forget about it might work for you.
It won't work for the victims.

Pretending it isn't the church's fault is reprehensible in light of the facts you have just found out about.
It must be someone's fault.
The government. To an extent, yes, but their inspections would go by and they knew they were coming. So for a day or so, they didn't get abused, got fed good food and were allowed to do different things. As soon as gov. left the abuses resumed. If they were questioned by inspectors they were told beforehand what answers to give, if they told the truth they would be punished harshly for it.

So whose fault is it?

There were a total of about 130 schools in every territory and province except Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick from the earliest in the 19th century to the last, which closed in 1996.
Not just by a "handful" of them.
Don't pretend the Vatican didn't know what was going on either.

You and the pope seem to be on the same page anyway. Good for you.

"Pope Francis will not apologize to residential school survivors and their families for the role the Roman Catholic Church played in operating the schools or the abuses suffered by their students."

I can't see how anyone with this information would actively support an organization that has no problems with that.
Here you are showing powwow videos and being "100%" indian.
Then when faced with the realities of what you support you have to make a decision.
A decision you can't make.
You have your religious identity now and your traditional religions became simply traditions.

55. Long before there were any Churches

You do know that American Indians were very spiritual people. You do understand that that don't you? We didn't need anyone to make us believe in a higher being, we already new that there was.

56. I absolutely know that.

I know a lot about the different beliefs in the creator. From different tribes and even different beliefs within the tribes.
None of them mention Jesus.
The people that came representing Jesus treated Indians like shit, yet there you are now, defending them.
Move on he says. Exactly what they want you to do.
Have your little powwows and pretend nothing ever happened, defend the church and "LMAO" when hearing about your people being abused.
Way to go.

57. As a wiseman once told me

You can call God anything you like they are all one in the same. It is what we believe and will be to the day I die

My 104 year old Father was the source,

58. Sure. I can call a rock God if I want.

Doesn't make it so.
When you actively support an organization the abused the shit out of your people for a century you have made a decision.
Since you claim Mohawk descent, do you believe in Shonkwaya'tihson or Yahweh?
Which one has people on earth that will abuse you if you don't follow them?

59. You can believe anything your little heart desires,

I would never ask another person to believe in something they don't believe exists.

61. I do believe in God

But there are times I question whether he exists, like when he took my mother and my youngest brother was killed by a drunk driver and my sister passed away from Cancer, at times like those I prefer to be alone to try and think thru my doubts and to remember the words of my Tribal Leaders.

You defined yourself as Mohawk.
So do you believe you were created by yahweh or Shonkwaya'tihson?

You answered yahweh.
It explains why you defend the church and not your people.

73. That's good.

But you won't acknowledge the abuses performed by a religion you support against your people.
That's even better than dying or throwing out an LMAO.

76. Then tell me what restitution do you think

would be appropriate, because you do know money will never be awarded and if it was the church would and could tie it up in court for many years.
