Only 18 Percent Of Americans Can Drive Manual (transmission)

http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2016/10/11/report-only-18-percent-of-americans-can-drive-manual/

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A new report shows fewer Americans own a car with manual transmission let alone know how to operate one. And there appear to be a number of reasons for it.

The report from U.S. News and World Report show only 18 percent of U.S. drivers know how to operate a stick shift. It says that because of advancements in automatic transmissions and fuel economy, only about 5 percent of vehicles sold in the U.S. today come with a stick shift. That’s down from 25 percent of cars in 1987.

The third pedal is also bad for re-sale value, on average selling for $2,000 less than cars with automatic transmissions.

I do have to admit, by last GTI was an "auto".. DSG. But I went back, my new ST has a 6 speed manual. I've mostly owned manuals all my life.

2. Sold my Ford Focus manual ST and bought a Ford SHO had no choice on auto or manual it's auto...

i like it especially dealing with traffic in CA...
When kids get older will teach them manual just for pure fun of it...
Manuals are great on open roads but in traffic they suck big time......

6. yea..

i got all the toys and leather (hehe) too... all of it.
I've already put cobb motor mounts on it and brakes. The F1 tires were junk too so I scrapped those and went to perelli. It's a little rough for a daily driver now, but man drives good. This car doesn't really need any serious work, it's pretty damned fast.

8. Had the leather seats loved them, changed the exhaust system and the CAI and retuned it had a blast

Hated the torque steer but the new RS cures that..
Kids are getting older need more room and daddy gets what he wants..

Ford Taurus SHO DOHC AWD V6 Twin turbo..
Retuned the engine added in a new exhaust system with a CAI and my little baby throws out 410hp and 450 torque and it looks like an old mans cars...

19. I will tell you a funny true story.....

Years ago after researching small cars with speed i settled on the ST did like the SHO but ST was half the price did a lot of work on it even bought the tuning chip from Ford and it kicked ass , put a blow out valve on it ,i don't race i just like a fast lively car...

But i noticed every time i was at a traffic light some idiot in his rice machine or GTI or Subaru was challenging me to a race i was like WTF leave me alone,it was embarrassing the guy or girl is revving the engine then when lights changes squeels off down the road wife would look and go wtf was that ?

About 2 years later Netflix had a movie that the kids wanted to watch called "The fast and the furious" i think it was part 2 about a bunch of punks driving souped up small cars with the noisy blow off valves and racing each down the streets.....

Wife looks at me and goes thats why everyone wants to race you they think you are a fast and furious wannabe, next day went to dealership and ordered a Ford SHO....

20. yea that's the ONLY

reason I do what I do. I don't track my car or anything, it's a daily driver, nothing more.
But I love for those first in line stoplight moments when some kid gives me the look.
If they are cool about it, I'll run them. If they are doing the engine rev and all that stupid shit, I just granny it out of the gate and watch them blow blue smoke for 100 yards before they see the let-down.
It's hard for me, really. I grew up on big block V-8's. This hyper 4cyl stuff is annoying to me. But I just can't stand being that guy with the de-tuned POS. I cant stand it.
And since I'm too lazy now to rip the engine and trans out of a brand new car and do it right, I go with what the factory has to offer. Unfortunately, that usually means flashy badges.
I swear the most fun car I ever owned was a 76 Torino.. all rusted out, tan ugly piece of shit.. no hubcaps, it looked like absolute hell.
My dad had gotten ahold of an old 427 cammer years before that. Guess where I planted that sucker? We had to cut out the fender wells to get it in there because the heads were so wide. Parts were a real sucker to find for it too, it was definitely a rare bird, and man what I would give to have that thing back today. Hell, it was worth it's weight in silver even back then.
No one in the county would run with me, they all knew within a week what it was. But damn I had fun when we went to other towns looking for fun. The worst part about that car was the 400 pounds of feed sacks full of sand I had in the trunk. That thing would not hook to save it's own ass. I'd be going through town with 15PSI air in the back tires practically running flat just in case someone wanted some action.
Those were the days man...
Dad ended up making me pull the engine after about 6 months because he worked out a deal to trade someone for an old Indian motorcycle... and he still has that bike today. It's one of those old leg-breakers with the hand adjustable timing and stuff.
The sad part is, that old cammer is worth WAY more than that stupid motorcycle is today.

21. Thats one of the things i loved about America the car culture grew up in Europe had pictures of

muscle cars all over my walls...
When i came to America first car i bought was a 69 Oldsmobile 442 convertible was great in the summer but sucked in the winter was living in NY...
When i moved to CA bought a fixer upper 70 Dodge Charger R/T,fixed it up and my mistake was painting it Ferrari red even when parked it looked like i was speeding stood out on the FWY i always got speeding tickets...

Getting back to manuals versus auto the SHO has paddle shifters you put the trans in sports mode will only shift gears if i press the up or down paddles located on the steering wheel.
Basically i can stay in first gear until 6.5k hit the up paddle and she shifts into second floor her till 6.5k hit the paddle and she shifts into 3rd....

It's not a manual but it is pretty damn close to it .

When i was younger loved muscle cars but now am spoiled by GPS,SiriusXm radio with 12 speakers,ABS brakes, keyless ignition, remote start etc.....

Still have a 5 speed manual Porsche 911 cabriolet parked in the garage for the kids when they are older and possibly responsible..

17. Hills, man...

Manuals are great on open roads but in traffic they suck big time......

Hills were the bane of my life. Facing up them, I mean, at stop lights or stop signs.

I still have nightmares involving being stopped on a hill and my brakes give out and I start rolling backwards picking up speed, faster and faster and can't stop.

Never happened, but the fear was always there

18. My Focus ST that i sold had i think 3 second delay on a hill it did not roll backwards so as you let

off the clutch car did not move backwards kinda neat....
Remember years ago driving girlfriends dodge colt manual in SF it was a nightmare on the hills what pissed me the most the driver behind would pull up to within inches off my ass so if i rolled a little backwards while taking off would hit him....

7. I have three superduty pickups. Work trucks. All have manual trans in them.

I'm good with auto trans in the family vehicles but for pulling heavy trailers in the mountains I'll take a heavy truck and a manual every time.

10. As technology progresses, certain skills become obsolete

I'm not sure I would be as concerned over no one being able to drive a stick as I would be over people not being able to do basic math due to the advent of calculators. But, I haven't owned a car since the 90s.

12. I envy you. Whenever I'm in a big city: Chicago, NY NY, Boston, DC ... I ride Mass Trans.

Cheap ticket & I get to relax & enjoy the ride.

But reality on the ground is you are an ex-pat living in England.

In America esp. in the West, you have to an automobile. Mass trans is non-existent.

RE: Manual Transmission, LUV IT !

It's how I learned. Fiat Spider then Nissan Sentras, not to mention pickem up trucks.

W/ a hand break you can Drift. Fun, Fun, Fun !!

None of that matters anymore. In a few years we will have driverless cars w/out steering wheels and pedals.

11. I own a Nissan Frontier with a six speed manual floor shift. ...

I had to get a dealer to search the entire Tampa Bay Area of Florida to find such a pickup truck. He only found one.

I have owned stick shifts all my life. I have never been fond of automatics. I also prefer a wheel gun over a semi auto for home defense and concealed carry.

One big advantage of a stick shift is that it is less likely to be stolen.

14. For years all I bought was stick

3 speed automatics sucked. Then they got a lot better, bought a Chevy Cruze. 6 speed auto, standard with the car. I can't tell the difference.

Lot easier in traffic too.

16. that's unfortunate...

so many skills being lost.

I loved driving my cars that had manual transmissions in them.

Sort of sad now, though. Both Mr squeek and I have knee issues that would make driving one extremely difficult, if not impossible.

I saw a story recently where a car thief (or thieves) tried to rob a car but couldn't drive a stick. Hahahaha!!! I'm imagining them bucking slowly down the street...what a getaway that must have been!

24. The Amazing Race is a TV show where people race around the world

Teams of two people race around the world in this show. Every season several teams have trouble driving cars with standard transmissions in them. One team went from first in that leg of the race to last due to being unable to drive a manual transmission. I grew up driving a standard or manual transmissions but many of the younger people have never used a standard or manual transmission.

The Amazing Race is a good tv show. Everyone who has watched the show knows that there will be one or more segment or leg where you will have to drive a manual transmission and there is still issues with some teams
