1. Today is a big family event for us. I'm a right leaning moderate and independent as are most of us.

There are a few left leaning moderates and independents here as well. Politics is discussed with courtesy, reason and good will. Minds are not usually changed but we all walk away with new views to think about.

BUT, with us, it is family first no matter what.

I wish everyone a great holiday season. Be nice to those around you and have enough courtesy to listen twice as long as you talk.

4. We had a great day and it is still going on. We did talk politics and the results were unexpected.

This is a pretty broad mix of well educated people who stay up to date on current news.

I posed a question.

If "we" could install a new president today, who would we chose.

There were no arguments and everyone had ideas but we could not find that single person from the right or the left that has that right now appeal.

It was kind of sad but we had a great and very honest discussion and came to the conclusion that we really do not like any of them that well and mainly we do not trust any of them from either side of the fence. We discussed the people/individuals, and not team A or team B.

Romney came out near the top and that kind of surprised me but then only if he does not slide further to the right. He was viewed as a true moderate more than the rest.

The ladies were a bright spot in this. Their perspective is the success of their children and they were not to supportive of the left. Social programs are great but it is their children and grandchildren that are going to have to pay for it.

We are primarily a native american family and yet none of us are sympathetic towards the large number of immigrants who are now trying to force their way into our nation. Again, who is going to pick up the bills for them, and since when did it become their right to be here? Again, the ladies thought that we needed to take care of minority Americans first.

It was a great day and the older teens witnessed a civil, open, and honest discussion about politics and what we see as the future of our people and our nation. They asked questions and were answered honestly with multiple respected view points. This is night and day different than what they see on TV every day.

The teachers at the table gave them some homework to investigate and research for our Christmas day discussions.

This could turn into a great and educational family tradition.

3. Near the end

of the meal, talk turned to guns and gun control between a Libertarian, a right-leaning Independent, a more left leaning Liberal, and a maybe-Moderate Republican who works at Smith and Wesson.

Disaster was averted when my very bad knees gave out and I fell at the top of the stairs headed toward the bathroom, creating a diversion.

Otherwise, it was a good day.

But I'm gonna be sore as hell tomorrow.

5. Right or left leaning our family are all hunters and shooters and support 2A.

We live in a state with very strong gun control laws and see that they do nothing to slow down or prevent gun crimes.

Most of us have CCW's, both men and women, and shoot on a regular basis to maintain proficiency.

If gun control worked there would be no gun crimes or homicides by gun in Chicago.

8. Agree.

There ARE liberal gun owners.

I believe law abiding people have a constitutionally guaranteed right to own and enjoy their firearms.

9. In the debate last night

both sides felt that they had the only correct and sensible answer, not realizing that it's a lot more complicated than one size fits all solution.
