It was to settle an argument. The date on the poster was several days prior to the day it was hung. Presumably if time travel were possible a traveler would see the poster and hop back the few days and attend. Since history was not rewritten, and no paradoxes arose, it was assumed that either time travel was not possible, or no time travelers ever saw the invite.
