US Economy Like The Titanic, Moving Towards Iceberg At Full Steam Ahead - Economist

Published time: 15 Oct, 2018 14:30

The US economy is on the rise, but its expansion is coming to an end, warns Scott Minerd, Global Chief Investment Officer at investment firm Guggenheim Partners.

“Just as an iceberg loomed in the distant darkness to be struck by the Titanic under full steam, so the US economy approaches the distant fiscal drag of 2020 under the full steam of rate hikes to contain inflation and an overheating labor market,” he wrote on Twitter.

In an interview with CNBC, Minerd elaborated on his post. “Ultimately this expansion will end and it is going to end because monetary policy is going to get too tight at the same time fiscal policy is going to turn into fiscal drag in 2020,” he said.

US Secretary of State: Iran and Its Proxies Must Be Expelled From Syria

OCTOBER 11, 2018 11:36 AM 0

Any resolution to the ongoing conflict in Syria must include the removal of Iran and its proxies from the war-torn nation, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday.

“The onus for expelling Iran from the country falls on the Syrian government, which bears responsibility for its presence there,” Pompeo said in an address at the Jewish Institute for National Security of America’s annual awards dinner at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, DC. “We’ve been clear: if Syria doesn’t ensure the total withdrawal of Iranian-backed troops, it will not seek — not receive one single dollar from the United States for reconstruction.”

Furthermore, Pompeo noted, the US would continue to back Israel’s “right to target Iranian-backed militias within Syria for as long as that threat remains.”

The Trump administration, Pompeo asserted, was “leading a historic international campaign to apply diplomatic and economic pressure against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

A Staggering Number Of US Troops Are Fat And Tired, Report Says

By: J.D. Simkins   1 day ago

A 2018 RAND report on health promotion and disease prevention has painted a grim picture of the military’s physical fitness and sleep standards.

The study, featuring roughly 18,000 randomly selected participants across each of the service branches, showed that almost 66 percent of service members are considered to be either overweight or obese, based on the military’s use of body mass index as a measuring standard.

While the number of overweight service members is a cause for concern, it correlates with the obesity epidemic plaguing the United States, where, as of 2015, one in three young adults are considered too fat to enlist, creating a difficult environment for recruiters to find suitable candidates for military service.

Broken down by service, the 2018 report lists the Army as the branch accounting for the highest percentage of overweight troops, with 69.4 percent of soldiers falling under this category.

The Army was followed by the Coast Guard (67.8 percent), Navy (64.6 percent), Air Force (63.1 percent) and Marine Corps (60.9 percent).
