Economy Propped Up On Govt Debt? US Economy Dodges The Threat Of Painful Spending Cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) — The budget agreement that congressional leaders and President Donald Trump forged late Monday lifted a big potential drag on the U.S. economy for this year and next.

Under the agreement, the economy was spared from a series of deep spending cuts that were set to take effect under a far-reaching budget law enacted in 2011. Monday’s agreement nullified those cuts and increased spending by $320 billion over two years.

Still, that additional spending isn’t expected to deliver a significant boost to the economy. That’s because the $320 billion figure is somewhat misleading. It’s an increase compared with the deep cuts that would have been required under the 2011 law. But it’s only a small gain compared with the current level of spending.

“It’s not so much that it’s a big boost, but it’s a pain that was avoided,” said Michael Pugliese, an economist at Wells Fargo Securities.

Like most economists, Pugliese hasn’t revised his economic forecasts based on Monday’s deal. He still expects economic growth to slip to 2.6% this year, a solid pace, from 2.9% in 2018.

Still, the budget deal preserves the higher levels of federal spending that have helped support the economy under Trump as he prepares to seek re-election. The agreement also lifts the limit on the government’s borrowing authority for two years, thereby avoiding a difficult battle that twice bedeviled the Obama administration and weighed on consumer sentiment and the financial markets.

The increase in the government’s borrowing authority, also known as the debt ceiling, has been a partisan flashpoint that has ignited epic political fights. If the debt ceiling isn’t raised, the government can no longer borrow and is forced to default on some of its obligations. It’s a prospect that can panic financial markets by eroding confidence in the United States as a place to invest.

Debka: Urgent Consultations in Washington, Moscow on Reported US-Russian Submarines in Firefight

NOTE: DEBKA has been proven unreliable in the past but at times they do get things right.

Jul 2, 2019 @ 22:24 Diane Shalem

First reports reaching DEBKAfile’s military sources say that a US submarine intercepted a Russian nuclear sub in American waters opposite Alaska. The Russian sub escorting the nuclear submarine responded with a Balkan 2000 torpedo and scuttled the US vessel. Urgent consultations in both the White House and the Kremlin were taking place on Tuesday night. US Vice President Mike Pence called off an appearance in New Hampshire after being recalled to Washington for a conference called by President Donald Trump without explanation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin cancelled an engagement and headed for the Kremlin to confer with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and military chiefs, after learning that 14 submariners died in a fire that broke out on a nuclear-powered “experimental submarine in Russian waters.” This account carried in Russian media varies in most respects from the first reports reaching this site and may refer to a separate incident. They report between 14 and 17 members of an AS-12 nuclear powered submarine died of poisonous fumes caused by a fire aboard the vessel. The submarine was described as experimental and unarmed but often used in spy missions. It is unclear how many of the 25 crew survived. Local media suggest four or five are receiving treatment in Severomorsk’s military hospital for poisoning and concussion injuries. Another news account said the majority of the officers died in or on their way to hospital. These reports do not cite the cause of the fire.

Trump Threatens Iran With OBLITERATION By Overwhelming Force If It Attacks Anything American

Arguing that Iran understands only “strength and power,” US President Donald Trump threatened to show them just that, tweeting that any Iranian attack on America would be met with “overwhelming force” and “obliteration.”

As relations between Iran and the US strain to the brink of open conflict, Trump warned Washington's long-term Middle Eastern rival in a Tuesday tweet that “any attack by Iran on anything American will be met with great and overwhelming force.”

....The wonderful Iranian people are suffering, and for no reason at all. Their leadership spends all of its money on Terror, and little on anything else. The U.S. has not forgotten Iran’s use of IED’s & EFP’s (bombs), which killed 2000 Americans, and wounded many more...

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump
....Iran’s very ignorant and insulting statement, put out today, only shows that they do not understand reality. Any attack by Iran on anything American will be met with great and overwhelming force. In some areas, overwhelming will mean obliteration. No more John Kerry & Obama!

Trump also rather boldly set himself apart from the Democratic politicians he believes to have been soft on the Islamic Republic:

No more John Kerry & Obama!

The president’s brash tweets came in response to Iran’s statement earlier in the day, which declared that diplomatic channels between the two countries were now permanently closed due to Trump placing sanctions on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

Israel's Netanyahu Urges Support For U.S. Against Iran's 'Aggression'

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday called on the international community to support the United States against Iran as tensions between the two countries escalated after the downing of a U.S. drone by Iran.

“In the last 24 hours Iran has intensified its aggression against the United States and against all of us. And I repeat my call for all peace-loving countries to stand by the United States in its effort to stop Iranian aggression,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “Israel stands by the United States on this.”

U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran made “a very big mistake” by shooting down a U.S. military drone that Tehran said was on a spy mission over its territory, in an incident that fanned fears of wider military conflict in the Middle East.

Asked how the United States will respond, Trump told reporters, “You’ll find out.”

Last month an Israeli minister warned of possible direct or proxy Iranian attacks on Israel should the stand-off between Tehran and Washington escalate.

Asked if Israel’s armed forces were on any changed alert status given Trump’s statement on Iran, an Israeli military spokesman said they were not.

U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton will meet Netanyahu in Israel on June 23.

Trump Celebrates LGBT Pride Month, Urges World to Decriminalize Homosexuality

President Donald Trump tweeted Friday in celebration of LGBT Pride Month, which begins in June, and repeated his administration’s call for the international community to decriminalize homosexuality in countries where it is illegal.

Trump has frequently been attacked by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) activists on the left, particularly for his administration’s policies on transgenderism.

Trump has barred transgender individuals from serving in the military, and reversed Barack Obama’s policies encouraging public schools to provide for transgender bathrooms. His administration also recently insisted on sticking to a definition of sexual discrimination that refers to biological sex.

More broadly, however, President Trump has championed gay rights at home and abroad.

On the campaign trail in 2016, he was proud of his support from the LGBT community, emerging onstage at a rally in Colorado bearing a Pride flag with the words, “LGBT for Trump.”

LANSING, Mich (WLNS) - The Michigan Supreme Court today ruled in the case of a Lansing couple who refused to give their children medical treatment due to their religious beliefs.

The court ruled that a parent who is legitimately practicing his religious belief who does not provide medical treatment for a child "shall not be considered a negligent parent or guardian."
