Illegals demand representation in White House meetings

Illegal immigrants plan to picket the White House Monday afternoon, calling on fellow immigrant-rights advocacy groups to refuse to meet with the Obama administration until President Obama specifically includes illegal immigrants in any future meetings.

“We are among the millions of people who will either benefit or be harmed by the decisions the President makes, and we are here to represent ourselves in any future negotiations,” said Rosi Carrasco, one of organizers, in a statement announcing the action.

I can just imagine what would happen if an illegal immigrant showed up at a Mexican cabinet meeting. Anyone care to raise their hand and answer that question?

Is the GOP really going to impeach? Or is it a fundraising ploy?

Here’s the 11 fundraising emails the DCCC sent invoking the nonexistent threat of impeachment

At link

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has been really busy over the last few days. As noted in a separate post, the White House and Democrats really want Americans to think that House Republicans are seriously considering impeaching President Barack Obama.

The DCCC did this in June, too. The House Democrats’ campaign arm sent out several emails after Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) announced that he planned to file a lawsuit on behalf of the lower chamber over President Obama’s extraordinary abuse of executive power. The fundraising push worked. The DCCC boasted a $10.9 million haul in June, while the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) raised $9.6 million.

House Republican leaders are, of course, not serious about impeachment. They know that it’s not a smart political strategy, especially in an election year. But you wouldn’t know that from the 10 fundraising emails the DCCC has sent out since Friday morning.

The Sarah Palin Channel Launches Online

Sarah Palin has started her own subscription-based online network.

The Sarah Palin Channel, which went live on Sunday, bills itself as a "direct connection" between the former Alaska governor and GOP vice presidential candidate and her supporters, with "no need to please the powers-that-be," Palin says in a video mission statement on her channel's home page.

"Are you tired of the media filters?" she asks. "Well, I am. I always have been. So we're gonna do something about it."

"We'll talk about the issues that the mainstream media won't talk about," she adds.

Palin says she oversees all content posted to the channel. This will include her own political commentary. Other features for subscribers include the ability to submit questions to Palin and participate with her in online video chats.

I just couldn't resist posting this. I for one, will not be sending any subscription money her way. But this is America, and everyone has the opportunity to do what she's doing. Just how successful it will be, remains to be seen.

ObamaCare getaway: 5 US territories released from health care law

According to the article, 5 territories of the US will be exempt from most of the provisions of the ACA. But what is more interesting to me is the administration's interpretation of the word "state" meaning it did NOT refer to the territories. I wonder if this will be used in the USSC fight over state exchanges?

But late last week, Tavenner sent a letter to the governments of those same five territories exempting their individual health insurance markets from virtually all the major remaining provisions. She said that after a "careful review," the department determined the definition of "state" actually means "these new provisions do not apply to the territories."

Nancy Pelosi is 'very certain' Democrats will take back House

Say this about House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi: She knows how to fire up her fellow Democrats and rile Republicans at the same time.

Pelosi told The Washington Post in an interview posted Wednesday that she’s confident about winning the 17 seats needed to take power from Speaker John Boehner and the GOP, citing voter enthusiasm and support from major donors. She said she would like to win 25 seats, noting Democrats are “playing” in 70 districts and “the candidates give me so much confidence.”

Here’s what the top Democrat said:

"I feel very certain that we will win the 17 seats we need. We have to net that though, which means we have to hold everything else. And right now, members are telling me now that the Koch Brothers are just pouring money into their districts. That has an impact, there’s just no question."

Nativism, the new word for racist.

I've been seeing the word nativist being used recently to describe those opposed to immigration reform. I never really thought of it in the context of racism, but it seems some on the left (primarily) are making the comparison. In a recent post here, I was told that they are mutually exclusive, and that one is not necessarily related to the other.

So, I did a little research and found a few things. What do you think? Is Nativist going to be the new R word? Will those who believe that we need to secure our borders before we discuss amnesty be called nativists instead of racists? It seems to me to be an intellectually lazy argument regardless of the label.

Of Course Nativism is Racist!

In the American context, racism is a system of institutions, attitudes, and ideas which preserve white power and privilege. In other contexts, racism is any system of institutions, attitudes, and ideas which preserve the power and privilege of certain large social groups, defined on the basis of birth, kinship, or more often notional kinship. Racism is not defined by skin color. Racism can target linguistic, religious, or other cultural groups.

If we are going to stop racism, we must challenge racism, racist ideas, and racist mindsets. We need to start with ourselves, and recognize our internalized racism, in order to escape from it.

(I admit I don't have any direct experience of racial oppression. I make an analogy between racism and sexism, and draw on my experience of sexism to try to fight racism too.)

Nativism in America Today

Nativism is a concept that has been very controversial in American political discourse. Through its nineteenth-century, anti-immigration, Anglo-Protestant views that vouch for a more pure and “white” America, it is understandable why many people oppose nativists and nativism in general. Its role in American history, however, has been quite significant, especially in terms of its effect on our immigration policy throughout the years. Here, I hope to provide some conceptual clarifications and secure an understanding of nativism. I wish to show how nativism has persisted historically and in contemporary times, narrowing my focus mainly on contemporary nativism and its effects on U.S. immigration policy. In doing this, I want to show how nativism is essentially an inherent form of racism that has persisted over time, and has developed into a more discreet and elusive form of racism that has a negative impact on our immigration policy.

In comparing historical and contemporary nativism, I hope to provide a clearer understanding of the discriminatory fashion of immigration policy in the U.S. and how nativism has influenced such policy and anti-immigration as a whole. I hope to disprove the nativist belief that today’s form of anti-immigration is merely a cry for help in “protecting” our nation’s values and liberties with no racist influence. In short, social ills based on race have been produced through the movement of nativism that have resonated in American society today. Here, I would like to demonstrate how such ills have emerged.

Real or faked. What do you think?

A Military Fiance Returns To Her Car To Find A Hate-Filled and Threatening Letter On Her Windshield

A military fiance’s “I Love My Soldier” car decal offended a random passerby so deeply that they left a hate-filled and threatening letter on her windshield.

So I noticed your “I love my soldier decal. I’m sure he is your “hero” too right? I feel really bad for you and how blind you must be to what is really going on in this country. First off he is not your hero.

Your “man” is a pawn being used in the immoral game of wholesale murder. If you’re aware of the real reasons America goes to war(corporate profits) and the role “soldiers” play in making such immoral acts possible. The last thing you would label a soldier is a hero.

There is nothing heroic about blindly following immoral orders from a undeserved paycheck, especially when such orders involve the unnecessary murder of others!!! It’s people like you and your “soldier” who are destructing our country, shame on you b****! You’re lucky I didn’t slash your damn tires!!

Why do we fight over political sourcing?

When someone adds a link to a story, I always read it. I believe it's the least I can do in an attempt to have an honest debate. However, I've seen many here at Discussionist reject them out of hand with a line like:

Moonie times

Mother Jones

What exactly is the purpose of that? I look at it as nothing more than flame bait. So, with that said, let's look at two examples from those same sources.

From Mother Jones:
Here's How Obama Wants to Spend $3.7 Billion on the Child Migrant Crisis

On Tuesday, President Obama asked Congress for $3.7 billion in emergency supplemental appropriations to address the rapidly growing number of unaccompanied Central American children attempting to enter the United States. The Border Patrol apprehended 38,833 unaccompanied kids in fiscal year 2013, and it already has caught more than 52,000 in fiscal 2014.

The requested appropriations include:

$1.8 billion to the HHS's Administration for Children and Families: to provide more stable, cost-effective arrangements and medical care for unaccompanied children.
$1.1 billion to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE): for the detention, prosecution, and removal of undocumented families, as well as transportation costs for unaccompanied children ...

... Notably, Obama's letter to House Speaker John Boehner did not include a request to alter the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) of 2008. That law requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to turn over unaccompanied children from countries other than Canada and Mexico to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which temporarily houses them in shelters while it locates US-based family members or sponsors. (The kids are in removal proceedings throughout.)

From The Washington Times:
Obama wants $3.7 billion more to tend to illegals

Federal officials last week paid $584 to buy four versions of Monopoly, five packs of playing cards, a dozen beanbag tosses and other games for illegal immigrant children — a small fraction of what the Obama administration now says it will take to clothe, feed, transport, house and, yes, entertain the children surging across the border.

Government contractors stand to see a good payday after President Obama submitted a request Tuesday for an additional $3.7 billion this year to cover the costs of handling the illegal immigrant families and, most costly, the unaccompanied children from Central America who are entering the U.S. in record numbers ...

... Mr. Obama sent a letter to Congress detailing a request for 2014 alone: $879 million in additional funding to detain and deport illegal immigrant families, $116 million to transport unaccompanied children, and $522 million for more law enforcement both on the border and in Central America.

Mr. Obama also is asking for an additional $1.8 billion for the Health and Human Services Department to be able to house the children while they are awaiting immigration court hearings; $300 million for the State Department try to create better economic and security conditions in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador; and $64 million for the Justice Department to hire more immigration judges.

You may not like the political content of the papers involved, and you may not agree with the editorializing, but the numbers (the facts) are the same. So, the next time someone includes a link to a post, try to put your prejudices aside for a minute and do something important ... read it.

Wendy Davis to President "Visit the Border"

AUSTIN, Texas — Pressure on President Barack Obama to visit the Texas border is now coming from the state's most prominent Democrat, Wendy Davis, who on Thursday echoed Republicans urging him to see firsthand the crisis of thousands of young migrants entering the U.S.

Davis, the Democratic nominee for Texas governor whose campaign has garnered nationwide support, stopped short of criticizing Obama but expressed hope he would make time.

"It's one thing to hear the number. It's another thing to see for yourself the people — thousands — who are coming across," she said.

... The White House has insisted there was little the president could learn from a border visit that he didn't already know. Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry, one of Obama's harshest critics, met with the president in Dallas on Wednesday and put a border visit on a list of requests to Obama.

U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Texas Democrat, has also criticized Obama for skipping the border.
