Qandeel Baloch: Pakistan social media celebrity 'killed by brother' ("Honor killing")

Killed for refusing to conform to Islamic dictate. Was her Brother ISIS or just Muslim?"

Pakistani social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch has been killed by her brother in an apparent 'honour killing' in the province of Punjab, police say.

Ms Baloch, 26, recently caused controversy by posting controversial pictures of herself on social media, including one alongside a Muslim cleric.

Police say she was strangled to death.

Cases of women being killed for 'dishonouring' their family are commonplace in Pakistan.

Qandeel Baloch became a household name for posting bold, sometimes raunchy, photographs, video and comments.
◾How her murder reflects a divided country

Ms Baloch's parents told The Express Tribune that she was strangled to death on Friday night following an argument with her brother.

They said her body was not discovered until Saturday morning. Her parents have been taken into custody, the Tribune reported.

" brothers had asked her to quit modelling," family sources quoted by the Tribune said.

Sources quoted by the newspaper said that Wasim was upset about her uploading controversial pictures online and had threatened her about it.

Police said he had not been arrested and was on the run.

'No woman is safe'

Ms Baloch's murder was condemned by filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, whose documentary A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness won an Oscar earlier this year.

"I really feel that no woman is safe in this country, until we start making examples of people, until we start sending men who kill women to jail, unless we literally say there will be no more killing and those who dare will spend the rest of their lives behind bars," she told the AFP news agency.

Why some say death is 'good news', by BBC World Service South Asia editor Jill McGivering

Qandeel Baloch used social media to find fame and the reactions there showed the feelings she inspired, from admiration to disgust.

Some called her death "good news" and even praised her suspected killer. Others said it was wrong to condone her murder, even if she was flawed. Some showed outright support.

Qandeel Baloch has been dubbed Pakistan's Kim Kardashian. There are comparisons: the provocative selfies, the pursuit of celebrity, the controversial rise to notoriety.

But in Pakistan, women, especially poor ones, still lack basic rights, from schooling to choosing a husband and violence against them is rife. The country struggles with sexuality and especially with "immodest" women.

The fact that many of Qandeel's videos went viral suggests a titillating fascination with confident female sexuality - along with fear of its power and of her assertion of independence. However she lived her life, tweeted one, it was her life.

Ms Baloch rose to fame in Pakistan in 2014 when a video of her pouting at the camera and asking "How em looking?" went viral.

In a recent interview she was bitterly critical of Pakistan's patriarchal society and described herself as a leading exponent of girl power.

While many younger people saw her as a cultural icon and hailed her liberal views, she was also subjected to frequent misogynist abuse online.

Her request for better security was ignored by the government, Dawn reported, despite pleas made three weeks ago to the interior minister and other senior officials.

Hundreds of women are murdered every year in Pakistan in so-called honour killing cases.

House Democrats’ Plan to Secure Nation Is Less Than Two Pages Long

Agenda calls for combating online radicalization, gun control

House Democratic leaders unveiled a national security agenda that is less than two pages in length and prioritizes combatting online radicalization and restricting gun sales.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.), Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D., Md.), and other leading Democrats unveiled the agenda for a “stronger America” at a Thursday news conference on Capitol Hill.

The three-pronged agenda focuses on securing the nation, its future, and its democracy. The white papers outlining each target area are roughly one-and-a-half pages long.

Officials stated that the DECC has been abolished and U.K.’s environmental policy is will be transferred to a new ministry called the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Some former DECC’s functions will be outright abolished, while others will be handed back to the new ministry.

Islam must be eradicated

The number one scourge on this planet is Islam. The number two problem on this planet are the people who don’t think Islam is the number one problem.

The problem is not guns. It’s not cops. It’s not the right-wing. It’s not Christians. It’s not global warming. It’s not hurtful words. It’s not unsafe spaces on college campuses. It’s not people who are made to feel like they are subjected to the wrong bathroom. It’s not CEOs making too much money. It’s not campus rape. It’s not Zika. It’s not mercury in vaccinations. It’s not the lack of bicycle paths. It’s none of these things.

Islam is the number one problem. It’s not going to go away until eradication takes place.

People who insist that Islam be imported into areas that currently do not have Muslims are problem number two. This problem is not going to go away until eradication takes place.

Wise up people.

You must not elect a leader that does not understand that Muslims are a cancer. The supposed millions of peaceful Muslims are of no help to our number one problem. When you have cancer, the majority of your body that does not have cancer is of no help to you.

You have to eradicate or stop the growth of the cancer.

An entrepreneur who has developed a bulletproof jockstrap has taken the ultimate stand behind his device, allowing his business partner to shoot him in the groin in order to demonstrate its effectiveness.

Jeremiah Raber, 38, is the inventor behind Nutshellz, a bulletproof jockstrap that is specifically designed to protect a man’s most sensitive area from a wide array of threats, as the Huffington Post reports. Though there are other bulletproof jockstraps currently on the market, Raber’s device is made from ballistic Kevlar, and is considered to be six times stronger than steel. Raber relates that the inspiration behind developing a bulletproof jockstrap came from seeing one of his favorite MMA fighters downed by a swift blow to the groin.

“I didn’t expect to leave the bar that night thinking about the best ways to protect a pair of testicles, but I just thought there had to be a better way to absorb the shock from a misdirected kick to the groin,” he noted.

— HuffPostUKTech (@HuffPostUKTech) May 29, 2015
Most sales of the jockstraps are to police, SWAT teams, and military personnel, yet they have also been utilized by athletes. Raber has launched a $30,000 Kickstarter campaign in an effort to develop a smaller version for younger boys. As the Inquisitr has previously reported, the crowdfunding website has been utilized to amass venture capital for everything from films to inventions like Raber’s jockstrap.

In order to create buzz around the Kickstarter campaign, Raber filmed a video in which he allowed his business partner, Matt Heck, to take aim at his groin with a.22 long rifle, delivering a bullet straight into the jockstrap. As the Daily Mail reports, the test went off without a hitch, leaving Raber walking away laughing.

After being posted on the company’s Facebook page, the video of Raber testing the jockstrap has since racked up over 6,000 views.

“Armored Nutshellz makes the world’s strongest and most comfortable groin protector. It is lab tested and proven to stop a bullet,” the caption read. “Our next step? We’re ready to protect our young athletes, one cup at a time. So we took product testing to the next level.”

So far, the company’s Kickstarter has raised just $1,155 of the requested $30,000, yet Raber hopes the test video will help bring in enough contributions to allow Nutshellz to continue developing their bulletproof jockstrap.

McCarthy, House Dems will be punished for sit in

and they should be, it ain't 1969 anymore

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California confirmed Wednesday there will definitely be disciplinary action taken against Democrats who partook in the 26 hour gun-control protest on the House floor in late June.

Democrats staged the unprecedented sit-in in response to Republicans opting against bringing a measure, which failed in committee, requiring stronger background checks on those purchasing fire arms.

“We continue to make sure we’ve gathered all the information,” McCarthy told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “We know the number of rules that were broken, we know that there are a number of members that broke those and had even gone beyond – the treatment of others on the floor, the intimidation that some have used – so we are working on the appropriate response to all of that, and that will be coming soon.”
