America's Going to Hell in a Hand Basket and Obama Says We've Never Had It So Good

This was the year when Republicans had everything going for them, politically-speaking, in the 2016 presidential election.

On every level, economically, fiscally, socially, America is in a lot worse shape under Barack Obama's debt-ridden, inept presidency. And his party's frontrunner is offering us four more years of the same.

Is Trump actually ahead of Hillary Already?

Interesting observations

Think back to last year’s election in Britain, where the Tory Party ran well ahead of its polls on election day. The explanation for the polling gap was the existence of a large number of “shy Tories”—people who sided with the Conservative Party, but didn’t want to admit this to pollsters for a variety of reasons, the main one being an even more suffocating atmosphere of political correctness and media bias than we have here.

And then ask yourself how many taxi drivers are routinely polled. I don’t want to go all Tom Friedman here by making too much of Taxicab Epistemology, but I sure hear a lot of stories of people saying their latest taxi ride featured a strongly pro-Trump driver.

So then there’s this, from Tom Edsall’s column in the NY Times over the weekend:
In a detailed analysis of phone versus online polling in Republican primaries, Kyle A. Dropp, the executive director of polling and data science at Morning Consult, writes:
Trump’s advantage in online polls compared with live telephone polling is eight or nine percentage points among likely voters.

This difference, Dropp notes, is driven largely by more educated voters — those who would be most concerned with “social desirability.”

Centrist Democrats say "We can work with President Trump!"

Getting ready for Trump wins in their home states may just be good politics for moderate senators.

As Democrats portray Donald Trump as a dangerous leader for his party, most of them barely acknowledge he could be president. But some centrist Democrats say they’re ready and willing to work with the business mogul should he defeat their party’s nominee.

“The people will have a chance to vote. If Donald Trump is elected president there will be a great opportunity to sit down and have a conversation about what that agenda looks like,” explained Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), who has long backed Hillary Clinton. “If he’s president, we’re going to have disagreement. But we’d better all figure out how to come up with an agenda for the American people.”

Phoenix Artists Threatened With Jail Time If They Don’t Serve Gay Weddings

A lawsuit filed in Arizona claims a city ordinance forces local artists to use their talents to promote same-sex weddings and does not allow them to express freely their belief that marriage is between one man and one woman.

Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative, Christian legal organization, filed a pre-enforcement challenge to Phoenix’s city code May 12 for Breanna Koski and Joanna Duka, owners of Brush & Nib Studio based in Phoenix, Ariz.

Koski and Duka, who want to honor God through their art and business, specialize in hand painting, hand lettering, and calligraphy for events, like weddings.

Phoenix law “strips artists of their freedom to choose what to create and what to say in the marriage context,” the complaint against the city says. If Koski and Duke were to turn down creating art to celebrate a same-sex marriage, the city could fine them up to $2,500 for each day they violate the law and make them spend six months in jail, since their studio creates art for opposite-sex wedding ceremonies, according to the complaint.

Little Sisters of the Poor catch a break (thankfully)

Supreme Court calls for compromise on contraceptive mandate

The Supreme Court on Monday gave the Obama administration a final chance to work out a compromise with religious groups opposed to the birth control mandate under the Affordable Care Act.

In an opinion released Monday, the high court vacated the judgments of the high-profile case, Zubik v. Burwell, and sent it back to lower courts.

The court’s ruling Monday ignores the major question in the case, which is whether religious groups, like Little Sisters of the Poor, have been “substantially burdened” by the ObamaCare mandate.
It also doesn’t decide whether the federal government “has a compelling interest” to enforce the mandate.

Instead, the justices unanimously instructed both parties to find a tweak to the contraceptive mandate to eliminate any faith-based concerns “while still ensuring that the affected women receive contraceptive coverage seamlessly.”

It essentially works as a win for the Little Sisters, as they do not have to pay the fines, and Court is saying find a way to accommodate their beliefs.

Man who choked 8-year-old girl in women’s restroom stokes alarm over transgender access

The attack by a man on an 8-year-old girl in a women’s restroom last week in a Chicago restaurant is raising alarm about opposite-sex access to public facilities in the name of transgender rights.

Police say the man, 33-year-old Reese Hartstirn, entered the women’s room May 7 at Jason’s Deli in Chicago’s South Loop and choked the girl until she passed out.

The girl’s mother, who was in the adjacent stall, heard her daughter’s screams and rescued her, while restaurant patrons held the suspect until police arrived, according to WLS-TV in Chicago.

The Nebraska Republican State Convention is underway today in Omaha, Nebraska.

Sorry graham, Failure to Launch: #NeverTrump Third Party Effort Dies Aborning

An effort by prominent conservatives to recruit a third party candidate to run against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton is fizzling out.

A serious third party run would cost millions, and GOP donors have so far been reluctant to embrace a bid.
No major political star has stepped forward publicly so far to be a third-party candidate either, and possible recruits, such as Mitt Romney and Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), have ruled out doing so.
Polls also indicate that Republicans around the country are coming around to Trump now he's their presumptive nominee. A Public Policy Polling survey found Republicans are as unified around Trump as Democrats are around Clinton, with 72 percent or Republicans saying they are comfortable with him as their nominee.

Critics of Trump say the businessman’s fast-approaching victory in the primary contest — every other Republican candidate has now dropped out — also gives weight to arguments that those pushing a third-party effort are effectively ignoring GOP voters.

“I think it’s offensive to the people who have voted,” said former Romney fundraiser Lisa Spies. “They have chosen Donald Trump.
