God explains to Abraham that he is to be the father of the Chosen Race

A thought experiment regarding religion

What would be the impact on the world's religions if humankind devised a technological method of living forever, barring accidents and catastrophes?

Do American conservatives ever wonder

Why Euopean conservatives do better than them at the executive level? It's because they've replaced that Big Daddy in the Sky morality with a morality derived from humanism. Look at Cameron, for instance. He is pro personal responsibility, pro austerity to pay off the debt, pro choice, and pro gay marriage. While he may or may not be a believer in the Christian God, he clearly is able to distinquish between modern moral imperatives and the fairy tales of Bronze Age savages.

Sweat, piss, jizz and blood

Sing that dead band's song...

I think Warren would laugh at the cosmic irony here! He is missed (and the Russians too).

Lost...Like tears in the rain

The nature, the horror, and the beauty of human existence...

Have you/did you ever hit your mother with a hammer?

In this thread, in order to blindly support the GOP crazy, Dr. Ben Carson, it was suggested that it is normal for a teenager to hit his/her mother with a hammer

Pirandello on the campaign trail

Ben Carson stands by stories of childhood rage
Anthony Lurcher
6 November 2015

Ben Carson is increasingly on the defensive over stories he has told about his troubled childhood in his autobiography, Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story.

On Friday his campaign backed away from his claim that he had been admitted to the prestigious US military academy at West Point. Mr Carson, however, continues to stand by his assertion that as a teenager he tried to stab a relative, angrily denouncing what he says is liberal bias in a CNN investigation that found no corroborating witnesses to the event

One can argue back and forth as to whether or not Carson is being unfairly scrutinised. Quite frankly I find his young earth creationist's beliefs much more troubling than hyperbole regarding his childhood.

Regardless of all of those concerns, does anyone other than me find it absurd when the candidate is proclaiming himself to have been a youthful thug, the media is interviewing childhood friends who are claiming he was just a quiet kind of guy, and the candidate is proclaiming media bias?!?

The day the sun stood still

So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army, including all the best fighting men. 8 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”

9 After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10 The Lord threw them into confusion before Israel, so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon. Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon and cut them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah. 11 As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the Lord hurled large hailstones down on them, and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.

12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:

“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”
13 So the sun stood still,
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of Jashar.

The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel!

The scientific debunking of the sun standing still is amusing, but the real indictment of religion comes at the 8:45 mark. As the late Christopher Hitchens so accurately said, religion poisons everything
