West Australia unveils demonstration hydrogen home & green hydrogen strategy

Renew Economy | July 18 2019

West Australian gas network operator ATCO has unveiled its Clean Energy Hub that it hopes will demonstrate the potential of hydrogen gas to help supply the domestic market, as the WA Government announces the creation of a $10 million Renewable Hydrogen Fund.

The ATCO clean energy hub serves as a small-scale demonstration of how renewable energy can be used to generate electricity, and deliver zero-emissions renewable gas into homes, and has been established at the company’s Jandakot Operations Centre, south of Perth.

The $3.3 million hub includes a 300kW rooftop solar system, a 250kW battery energy storage system, and a 150kW electrolyser used to produce renewable hydrogen at the site.

The hub also includes a model home, allowing for the demonstration of the use of renewable hydrogen in household appliances, including using hydrogen for cooking on a gas stove.

Operators of Australian gas networks have faced combined pressures of rising gas prices and calls for energy supplies to move to zero emissions sources.

While electricity supplies can be easily shifted to renewable energy alternatives, the process is less straight forward when it comes to gas. Renewable fuels such as hydrogen can require modifications to gas network infrastructure and appliances, due to the different characteristics of hydrogen compared to natural gas...more:

Jeffrey Epsteins pilot deletes Instagram after Kellyanne Conway pic surfaces

July 17, 2019 | The Daily Dot

Kellyanne Conway was photographed with Epstein’s personal pilot in late 2016
A few days after Epstein’s arrest, an Instagram picture emerged that appeared to show Epstein pilot Larry Visoski posing with senior Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway on Dec. 28, 2016, in Palm Beach—long after the last time Trump claims he spoke with Epstein.

Visoski, going by the screen name “CaptBigDawg,” appears to be smiling as he posed with Conway, whom he called a “very Humble and gracious Lady .” A day afer it started making the rounds, both it and Visoski’s Instagram page have been deleted. But Visoski definitely is (or was) Epstein’s personal pilot, and Conway was in Palm Beach at the time.
While the picture is almost certainly real, there’s no indication of anything sinister behind it, or any particular significance to it at all. It might be true that a senior Trump adviser met with the pilot of a convicted sex offender, but that doesn’t mean either Conway or Trump ever met with Epstein around the time it was taken.

She might not have even known he had a connection to Epstein. It’s simply a picture of two people, not evidence of a sinister conspiracy or horrible crime. For the record, Trump was in Florida at the time—the 28th was the day of his bizarre press conference with Don King at Mar-A-Lago.... more:

Scotland just produced enough wind energy to power all its homes twice over

7/15/19 | CNBC

Wind turbines in Scotland generated 9,831,320 megawatt hours between January and June 2019, WWF Scotland said Monday.

The numbers, which were supplied by WeatherEnergy, mean that Scottish wind generated enough electricity to power the equivalent of 4.47 million homes for six months. That is almost double the number of homes in Scotland, according to WWF Scotland.

"Up and down the country, we are all benefiting from cleaner energy and so is the climate," Robin Parker, climate and energy policy manager at WWF Scotland, said in a statement Monday.

"These figures show harnessing Scotland's plentiful onshore wind potential can provide clean, green electricity for millions of homes across not only Scotland, but England as well," Parker added.

By 2030, the Scottish government says it wants to produce half of the country's energy consumption from renewables. It is also targeting an "almost completely" decarbonized energy system by 2050... more:

AP (2016): Melania Trump modeled in US prior to getting work visa

November 4, 2016

WASHINGTON (AP) — Melania Trump was paid for 10 modeling jobs in the United States worth $20,056 that occurred in the seven weeks before she had legal permission to work in the country, according to detailed accounting ledgers, contracts and related documents from 20 years ago provided to The Associated Press.

The details of Mrs. Trump’s early paid modeling work in the U.S. emerged in the final days of a bitter presidential campaign in which her husband, Donald Trump, has taken a hard line on immigration laws and those who violate them. Trump has proposed broader use of the government’s E-verify system allowing employers to check whether job applicants are authorized to work. He has noted that federal law prohibits illegally paying immigrants.

Mrs. Trump, who received a green card in March 2001 and became a U.S. citizen in 2006, has always maintained that she arrived in the country legally and never violated the terms of her immigration status. During the presidential campaign, she has cited her story to defend her husband’s hard line on immigration.

The wife of the GOP presidential nominee, who sometimes worked as a model under just her first name, has said through an attorney that she first came to the U.S. from Slovenia on Aug. 27, 1996, on a B1/B2 visitor visa and then obtained an H-1B work visa on Oct. 18, 1996.... more:

Norway's first hydrogen-powered car ferries take shape | 15 Jul 2019 | Rebecca Moore

Norled project manager tells Passenger Ship Technology about developing the supply chain to support its planned hydrogen ferries

Norwegian ferry operator Norled is leading the way in developing hydrogen-powered car ferries – one to be powered by liquid hydrogen and one by compressed hydrogen. These will be the first ferries powered by hydrogen in Norway.

The first ferry project saw Norled win a tender for a ferry with capacity for 80 cars, 10 trucks and 299 passengers, which will sail east of Stavanger in Norway between Hjelmeland, Nesvik and Skipavik. Three tonnes of liquid hydrogen will be stored on board and 400-kW fuel cells make up the energy system being placed on the top deck. “We are conducting in-depth risk assessments in liaison with the Norwegian Maritime Administration to demonstrate that the new technology is as safe as diesel-driven ferries,” said Norled project manager Ivan Ostvik.

Norled said it had considered various technical solutions but came to the conclusion that placing the hydrogen tank on the upper deck was the best alternative, both for safety and practical reasons.

Norled is working closely with ship designer LMG Marin and partner Westcon Power & Automation... more:

Biden on Iraq in 2005: "The decision to go to war was the right one"

Biden, like nearly all Democrats, argues that the Administration’s prosecution of the war has been inept. “The decision to go to war was the right one,” Biden said recently, “but every decision they’ve made since Saddam fell was a mistake.” In particular, Biden blames Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld for the troubles of postwar Iraq—for the Abu Ghraib torture scandal, for the failure to anticipate an organized insurgency, and for the difficulties encountered in the training of Iraqi soldiers. He told Condoleezza Rice, at her confirmation hearing, “For God’s sake, don’t listen to Rumsfeld. He doesn’t know what in the hell he’s talking about on this.”

Biden was once better known for his chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee than for foreign-policy expertise; he oversaw the confirmation hearings of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas, among others, and had established a reputation as a liberal in the mainstream of his party, and also as something of a grandstander.

His run for the 1988 Democratic Presidential nomination came to a sudden end when he was accused of borrowing, without attribution, from a television commercial by the former British Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock. This embarrassment did no permanent harm to his standing in the Senate, and he has remained highly visible there. Biden sponsored the Clinton Administration’s 1994 crime bill, which funded a hundred thousand new police officers for local communities and helped neutralize the “law and order” issue that had hurt the Democrats in previous years.... more:

In 25 years, China has gone from ZERO solar panels to leading the world by margin of 100%

In the space of 25 years, China will have gone from having virtually no solar panels to leading the world by a margin of more than 100%.

Estimates from market intelligence business Wood Mackenzie sees China’s photovoltaic panel installations hit a cumulative total of 370 GWdc by 2024 - more than double the US’s capacity at that point.

As countries around the world continue to increase their solar capacity, Wood Mackenzie predicts 2020 will be the last year of big growth in the industry.

China’s huge and rapidly developing population makes it the biggest energy growth market globally - although it is likely to be overtaken by India in the not-too distant future.

China already has more solar capacity than any other country in the world, and is home to several massive solar farms, including the world’s largest in the Tengger Desert. The country - the biggest clean energy investor in the world - is looking to dramatically increase the proportion of renewable energy in its power mix... more;

The $20bn plan to power Singapore with Australian solar

'Just a matter of when': the $20bn plan to power Singapore with Australian solar

Ambitious export plan could generate billions and make Australia the centre of low-cost energy in a future zero-carbon world

The Guardian | SAT July 13, 2019

The desert outside Tennant Creek, deep in the Northern Territory, is not the most obvious place to build and transmit Singapore’s future electricity supply. Though few in the southern states are yet to take notice, a group of Australian developers are betting that will change.

If they are right, it could have far-reaching consequences for Australia’s energy industry and what the country sells to the world.

Known as Sun Cable, it is promised to be the world’s largest solar farm. If developed as planned, a 10-gigawatt-capacity array of panels will be spread across 15,000 hectares and be backed by battery storage to ensure it can supply power around the clock.

Overhead transmission lines will send electricity to Darwin and plug into the NT grid. But the bulk would be exported via a high-voltage direct-current submarine cable snaking through the Indonesian archipelago to Singapore. The developers say it will be able to provide one-fifth of the island city-state’s electricity needs, replacing its increasingly expensive gas-fired power.

After 18 months in development, the $20bn Sun Cable development had a quiet coming out party in the Top End three weeks ago at a series of events held to highlight the NT’s solar potential. The idea has been embraced by the NT government and attracted the attention of the software billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes, who is considering involvement through his Grok Ventures private investment firm.... more:
