BBC: 'Cannabis burned during worship' by ancient Israelites - study

BBC 29 May 2020

Ancient Israelites burned cannabis as part of their religious rituals, an archaeological study has found.

A well-preserved substance found in a 2,700-year-old temple in Tel Arad has been identified as cannabis, including its psychoactive compound THC.

Researchers concluded that cannabis may have been burned in order to induce a high among worshippers.

This is the first evidence of psychotropic drugs being used in early Jewish worship, Israeli media report.

The temple was first discovered in the Negev desert, about 95km (59 miles) south of Tel Aviv, in the 1960s.

In the latest study, published in Tel Aviv University's archaeological journal, archaeologists say two limestone altars had been buried within the shrine.

Thanks in part to the dry climate, and to the burial, the remains of burnt offerings were preserved on top of these altars...MORE;

Gripped by disease, unemployment and outrage at the police, America plunges into crisis

By Matt Zapotosky and Isaac Stanley-Becker
May 29, 2020 at 5:23 p.m. PDT

A global pandemic has now killed more than 100,000 Americans and left 40 million unemployed in its wake. Protests — some of them violent — have once again erupted in spots across the country over police killings of black Americans.

President Trump, meanwhile, is waging a war against Twitter, attacking his political rivals, criticizing a voting practice he himself uses and suggesting that looters could be shot.

America’s persistent political dysfunction and racial inequality were laid bare this week, as the coronavirus death toll hit a tragic new milestone and as the country was served yet another reminder of how black people are killed by law enforcement in disproportionately high numbers. Together, the events present a grim tableau of a nation in crisis — one seared by violence against its citizens, plagued by a deadly disease that remains uncontained and rattled by a devastating blow to its economy.

“The threads of our civic life could start unraveling, because everybody’s living in a tinderbox,” said historian and Rice University professor Douglas Brinkley.

Barbara Ransby, a historian at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a longtime political activist, said the toll of the coronavirus outbreak made long-standing racial inequities newly stark. Then, images of police violence made those same disparities visceral.

“People are seething about all kinds of things,” said Ransby, the author of “Making All Black Lives Matter: Reimagining Freedom in the Twenty-First Century.” “There are major turning points and ruptures in history. . . . This is one of these moments, but we’ve not seen how it will fully play out.”... MORE:

Siemens to Fatso: F OFF. Launches World's Largest Wind Turbine at 14 Megawatts

Attention Righty: Siemens is a German multinational conglomerate company headquartered in Munich and the largest industrial manufacturing company in Europe. And Europe is on Another Continent. A Continent is one of several very large landmasses on the Earth. Just in case you never knew. LOL@RIGHTY

The new machine can be dialed up to 15 megawatts, and an even larger version is in the works, says Siemens Gamesa’s head of offshore technology.

The turbine's rotor diameter is around the same height as the Golden Gate Bridge.

19 MAY 2020

Siemens Gamesa on Tuesday launched the largest wind turbine ever publicly announced, a 14-megawatt model with a 222-meter rotor diameter meant for offshore wind farms.

Morten Pilgaard Rasmussen, head of offshore technology at Siemens Gamesa, told GTM the company expects to confirm its first orders for the new turbine soon, with offers already out to a number of "global" offshore wind developers.

The launch puts Siemens Gamesa back in first place in the rankings for the largest offshore turbines on the market. GE revealed its 12-megawatt Haliade-X platform in 2018 and secured its first orders the following year.

A 14-megawatt version of GE's Haliade-X has been referenced in permitting documents, according to Shashi Barla, principal analyst for wind technology and supply chain at Wood Mackenzie. But Siemens Gamesa's 14-222 DD model has a slightly larger rotor diameter and can increase its rating to 15 megawatts using a "Power Boost" function.

With delays to projects in the U.S. that plan to use the Haliade-X, both Siemens Gamesa's and GE's 14-megawatt turbines could see their first projects commissioned around the same time, Barla said.

Siemens Gamesa expects to install a prototype of the new 14-megawatt model in Denmark by fall 2021. That won't stop orders being placed in the meantime: Offshore wind companies are used to ordering turbines still under development, given the long lead times of projects. Or as Rasmussen puts it, they’re used to buying “green bananas.”...snip

The new turbine's nacelle will weigh 500 tons, considered lightweight by industry standards.

Trump Boasted of Avoiding STDs While Dating: Vaginas Are 'Landmines ... It Is My Personal Vietnam' | ALE RUSSIAN | October 28, 2016

In an unearthed interview from 1997, Donald Trump claimed he was a "brave soldier" for avoiding STDs during his single years in the late '90s.

"It's amazing, I can't even believe it. I've been so lucky in terms of that whole world, it is a dangerous world out there. It's like Vietnam, sort of. It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave solider, Trump said in the interview when Howard Stern asked how he handled making sure he wasn't contracting STDs from the women he was sleeping with.

The business-mogul-turned-politician elaborated on the fact in the interview, calling women's vaginas "potential landmines" and saying 'there's some real danger there"

Also appearing on Stern's show in 1993, Trump bragged about his promiscuous lifestyle while single and stated that men who didn't go to Vietnam didn't need to feel guilty because dating during the AIDS epidemic in the '80s was also dangerous.

"You know, if you're young, and in this era, and if you have any guilt about not having gone to Vietnam, we have our own Vietnam It's called the dating game,"Trump said to Stern in a 1993 interview. "Dating is like being in Vietnam. You're the equivalent of a soldier going over to Vietnam...

Poland to Fatso: F OFF. Poland added 236 MW of solar in two months

The country’s installed PV capacity reached 1.83 GW at the end of last month, according to the national grid operator.

PV Magazine | May 12, 2020 Emiliano Bellini

Polish grid operator, Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) says the country reached 1.83 GW of solar installations last month.

PSE on Monday announced the total solar capacity of the nation rose 8.1% in March and April, with 236.2 MW of new systems installed.

The grid operator had reported 1.29 GW of solar in Poland at the end of the year, up from around 1 GW in late September, and from just 486 MW at the end of 2018.... more:

Democrats Have Abandoned Civil Liberties

The Blue Party’s Trump-era Embrace of Authoritarianism Isn’t Just Wrong, it’s a Fatal Political Mistake

Matt Taibbi | May 15 2020

Emmet G. Sullivan, the judge in the case of former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, is refusing to let William Barr’s Justice Department drop the charge. He’s even thinking of adding more, appointing a retired judge to ask “whether the Court should issue an Order to Show Cause why Mr. Flynn should not be held in criminal contempt for perjury.”

Pundits are cheering. A trio of former law enforcement and judicial officials saluted Sullivan in the Washington Post, chirping, “The Flynn case isn’t over until a judge says it’s over.” Yuppie icon Jeffrey Toobin of CNN and the New Yorker, one of the #Resistance crowd’s favored legal authorities, described Sullivan’s appointment of Judge John Gleeson as “brilliant.” MSNBC legal analyst Glenn Kirschner said Americans owe Sullivan a “debt of gratitude.”

One had to search far and wide to find a non-conservative legal analyst willing to say the obvious, i.e. that Sullivan’s decision was the kind of thing one would expect from a judge in Belarus. George Washington University professor Jonathan Turley was one of the few willing to say Sullivan’s move could “could create a threat of a judicial charge even when prosecutors agree with defendants.”

Sullivan’s reaction was amplified by a group letter calling for Barr’s resignation signed by 2000 former Justice Department officials (the melodramatic group email somberly reported as momentous news is one of many tired media tropes in the Trump era) and the preposterous “leak” of news that the dropped case made Barack Obama sad. The former president “privately” told “members of his administration” (who instantly told Yahoo! News) that there was no precedent for the dropping of perjury charges, and that the “rule of law” itself was at stake.

Whatever one’s opinion of Flynn, his relations with Turkey, his “Lock her up!” chants, his haircut, or anything, this case was never about much. There’s no longer pretense that prosecution would lead to the unspooling of a massive Trump-Russia conspiracy, as pundits once breathlessly expected. In fact, news that Flynn was cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller inspired many of the “Is this the beginning of the end for Trump?” stories that will someday fill whole chapters of Journalism Fucks Up 101 textbooks... more:
