Inside the Radical New Hydrogen-Powered Yacht Concept That Could Change the Marine Industry As We Know It

'Aqua' pushes the envelope in every possible way.

Aqua may not the most inventive name for a boat, but Dutch design studio Sinot’s newest yacht concept more than makes up for its humdrum moniker with a radical dose of innovation and future-forward design.

Developed over the past five months—and unveiled just days before the Monaco Yacht Show—the behemoth 360-foot-plus superyacht prototype marks an exciting step forward in the marine industry: Aqua will be fully powered by liquid hydrogen. The handiwork of Lateral Naval Architects, the hydrogen propulsion system promises smooth and silent sailing at longer range with zero emissions—a major selling point for eco-conscious seafarers.

So, how does it actually work? The liquified hydrogen—which will be stored at -253°C in two 28-ton vacuum isolated tanks—is converted into electrical energy by proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEM) and used to provide power for propulsion, as well as the auxiliary system and hotel services. Batteries buffer the generated electricity to ensure power demands are always met. The result is a near noise-free sustainable sailer that boasts a top speed of 17 knots, a cruising speed of 10 to 12 knots and a range of 3750 nautical miles.

“Our challenge was to implement fully operational liquid hydrogen and fuel cells in a true superyacht that is not only groundbreaking in technology, but also in design and aesthetics,” designer Sander Sinot said.

Indeed, Aqua pushes the envelope when it comes to aesthetics, too. The exterior—inspired by “ocean swell”—sees curved lines flow across a five-deck set-up which has been designed to get guests as close as possible to the water: The aft deck features a water-covered staircase that cascades down the deck towards the ocean, while a generous-sized pool blends into the surrounding sea.... more:

Bush rejects Taliban offer to hand Bin Laden over
Taliban demand evidence of Bin Laden's guilt

President George Bush rejected as "non-negotiable" an offer by the Taliban to discuss turning over Osama bin Laden if the United States ended the bombing in Afghanistan.

Returning to the White House after a weekend at Camp David, the president said the bombing would not stop, unless the ruling Taliban "turn over, turn his cohorts over, turn any hostages they hold over." He added, "There's no need to discuss innocence or guilt. We know he's guilty"

Hereford, Texas: Bill buys his own Hydrogen station - the first in the state

Looking to the future: New hydrogen fueling station in Hereford created by “Hydrogen Bill”

KFDA, Amarillo Sep 18, 2019

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - A local farmer in Hereford has created the first hydrogen fueling station that is known of in Texas and is hoping to create a better economy and environment in the years to come.

Within the past two weeks, creator of Panhandle Sustainable Energy also referred to as Hydrogen Bill, finished building his hydrogen fueling station, what is known to be the first of it’s kind here in Texas.

He then brought back a hydrogen-powered car from California, where they are typically sold and driven.

“Hydrogen Bill is an outstanding innovator, and he had a vision for 20 years how we can use it in place of gas and oil. That’s how it all started. Back in those days hydrogen was extremely expensive, but he had a vision that one day it would become cheap and we could produce it in mass,” said Joshua Partheepan, assistant professor of power systems engineering at West Texas A&M University....

...“Now we can take pure water, rip it apart with electricity from the renewable resources and combine it in a fuel cell in these electric cars to give us now transportation without pollution without using a string based on a carbon-based formal,” said Ken Starcher, instructor of engineering and technology at West Texas A&M University.... more:

World's biggest wind turbine set to start turning off Netherlands

GE is about to set the blades turning on its giant 12MW Haliade-X prototype

Recharge Wind | Sep 16, 2019

Grandly unveiling the 12MW Haliade-X offshore wind turbine last year as being powered by a rotor star “five times the size of the Arc de Triomphe” could have been an act of hubris for GE, with some detractors cynically describing the design at its launch as the ‘most powerful turbine on a PowerPoint’.

But the US OEM looks like soon having the last laugh. The prototype of the record-breaking machine, which will fly the world’s biggest-ever rotor, spanning 220-metres, is this month to be set turning at a quasi-offshore location at the Port of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands.

The Haliade-X is a leap in engineering for the industry – and for GE, a doubling of the nameplate of its forerunner, the 6MW Haliade 150. The higher-rated unit will measurably outclass its closest rivals, promising to deliver 45% more power than Siemens Gamesa’s 10MW SG10.0-193DD and MHI Vestas’ like-rated V164 – though both of these turbine makers are known to be well-advanced in their work on 12MW-16MW designs.

The Haliade-X’s vast rotor will harness wind from a 38,000 square metre swept-area to turn a hulking, digitally-controlled direct-drive and permanent-magnet-generator transmission system with a 63% gross capacity factor, raising the current industry benchmark by five to seven points, which GE calculates will translate into $35-50m more revenue per unit over the life of a wind farm compared to its ‘ultra-large-class’ rivals...

But wait- don't wind turbines cause cancer?

IEEE Spectrum: Egypts Massive 1.8-Gigawatt Benban Solar Park Nears Completion

Sun-soaked Egypt’s first utility-scale PV power plant—one of the world’s largest solar installations—is coming online

Philippe Le Houérou, CEO of the International Finance Corporation, visits Benban Solar Park in Egyp

IEEE Spectrum: 17 SEPTEMBER 2019

Amid the sand dunes of the western Sahara, workers are putting the finishing touches on one of the world’s largest solar installations. There, as many as 7.2 million photovoltaic panels will make up Benban Solar Park—a renewable energy project so massive, it will be visible from space.

The 1.8-gigawatt installation is the first utility-scale PV plant in Egypt, a nation blessed with some of the best solar resources on the planet. The ambitious project is part of Egypt’s efforts to increase its generation capacity and incorporate more renewable sources into the mix.

“I think Benban Solar Park is the first real step to put Egypt on the solar production world map,” says Mohamed Orabi, a professor of power electronics at Aswan University.

Climate change is an increasingly urgent issue for Egyptians and much of the world. Already, global sea and air surface temperatures have risen by an average of 1 degree C above pre-industrial levels, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In Egypt, global warming will reduce agricultural productivity, induce flooding in the fertile Nile Delta, and cause more people to die from heat stress... more:

If only someone could come up with a way to store excess renewable energy...

DUmmie asks: Why is Biden in the lead?

DUmmie Sparkly commits Blaspheme!

I hear it's because he's viewed as the safest bet to beat Trump. He has the gravitas of having served as President Obama's VP. He's got decades and decades of experience.

But he has never been a great -- or even a good -- retail politician, as many times as he's tried, and now he is far, far worse. Set aside the long history that the RNC would love to turn into juicy campaign ads and smears, this is simply NOT our best candidate, by any measure.

Can we just admit that many of his answers were virtually incoherent?? (Radios and record players, as just one example?) I know what he was trying to say, but he is not able to say it.

Debates should matter. This is our party's time to decide. (Or, our party in the three early states -- the rest seem to follow suit.) My state is late, but I support candidates in the process.

In my undecided opinion, three of tonight's ten are now X'd out: Biden, Bernie, and Yang.

I have some favorites among the other seven -- I get emails and contribute to three -- but actually I'd be very excited to support and campaign for any one of them.

I just don't get why Biden is on the top of any list except the "ruled out" list. He's a great guy, and was a fine VP; this is just my personal opinion of his candidacy for potus. It astonishes me, seeing his performance tonight, that all the criticism and commentary is about the people who may have gone against him.

Floating wind-to-hydrogen plan to heat millions of UK homes

Project aiming to deploy 4GW, £12bn 'green hydrogen' array in the North Sea is backed by UK government | 13 September

Floating offshore wind turbines far out in the North Sea will convert seawater to ‘green’ hydrogen that will be pumped ashore and used to heat millions of homes, under an ambitious plan just awarded UK government funding.

Deployment of a 4GW floating wind farm in the early 2030s at an estimated cost of £12bn ($14.8bn) could be the first step in the eventual replacement of natural gas by hydrogen in the UK energy system, claimed Kevin Kinsella, director of the Dolphyn project for consultancy ERM.

ERM – which is working on Dolphyn with the Tractebel unit of French energy giant Engie and offshore specialist ODE – plans to integrate hydrogen production technology into a 10MW floating wind turbine platform, enabling each unit to import seawater, convert it to hydrogen and export the gas via a pipeline.

Deployment of hundreds of the floating platforms would be able to tap into the excellent wind resources far out in the North Sea, way beyond the depths accessible to fixed-bottom foundations, Kinsella told Recharge, estimating that a 4GW floating wind farm could produce enough hydrogen to heat 1.5 million homes.

“If you had 30 of those in the North Sea you could totally replace the natural gas requirement for the whole country, and be totally self-sufficient with hydrogen,” said Kinsella.... more:
