General Electric and H2V Commit to Massive Production of Hydrogen by Electrolysis

Paris, France - December 6, 2018: Addressing the global energy trend for cleaner energy and a reduced carbon footprint, H2V INDUSTRY today announced it has awarded GE Power's Grid Solutions business a contract for the turnkey supply of two 225 kV/30 kV electrical substations. These substations will feed the first 100 MW H2V INDUSTRY production units of the Port-Jérôme factories near Le Havre (76-Normandie) and Loon Plage near Dunkirk (Dunkerque, 59-Nord). H2V INDUSTRY forecasts the creation of approximately 200 jobs at each factory site in France in 2022. According to the “Hydrogen, Scaling up” study conducted by McKinsey for the Hydrogen Council, this energy source could reduce annual CO2 emissions by around 6 metric gigatons, compared with current levels.

World’s First Innovative Mass Production of Green Hydrogen

Recognized as a critical contributor to the energy transition’s success, green hydrogen is the most abundant element on earth and plays an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Green hydrogen contains up to three times more energy per unit mass than diesel, and two and a half times more than natural gas. Orkney's ageing ferries look to ditch diesel for hydrogen

It sounds like a renewable energy dream: a seagoing ferry powered by fuel wrested from water with the help of the wind and tides.

But if all goes well, such a vessel will in a few years be plying its trade among the islands of Scotland’s northern archipelago of Orkney, the culmination of a pioneering effort to demonstrate the role that hydrogen can play in a future low-carbon economy.

On the Orkney island of Eday, an electrolyser — which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen — tucked inside a green shipping container last year became the first in the world to use tidal power to make hydrogen.

A fuel cell installed on a pier on the Orkney mainland already uses some of the hydrogen produced by the electrolyser to generate electricity for berthed vessels. But Neil Kermode, head of the Orkney-based European Marine Energy Centre (Emec), which has helped lead the hydrogen project, said the gas could be more cost effective — and reduce emissions — when directly used in transportation.

The nine ageing ferries that connect Orkney’s islands used “massive” amounts of diesel fuel, Mr Kermode said. “We realised that if we could use the hydrogen to power our ferries, we would put another dent in our carbon addiction.”...more:

How do drivers like the hydrogen trucks developed for Project Portal?

Similar to its light-duty counterpart, the Mirai, the Alpha truck received a very warm welcome from drivers, even though it is just a prototype. It offers a substantially enhanced driving experience over a typical Class 8 truck, primarily due to substantially reduced vibration and handling. Since there is no sixteen-gear transmission, drivers no longer feel any grinding while trying to find the right gear and maximize torque. By delivering power and linear torque straight to the wheels, it gives the vehicle both a very powerful feeling and also a very smooth ride. Our drivers say it’s a relaxing experience compared to driving a normal diesel truck, just like driving a car down the road.

We clearly see the enhanced acceleration in the YouTube video released by The Wheel Network. How does the performance of hydrogen trucks compare to standard diesel trucks?

We designed the truck to mirror the specifications of a standard diesel truck very closely, notably by offering the same horsepower and torque. The main difference lies in how that torque is delivered and the way the driver experiences the truck’s horsepower: fewer noise and vibrations. You can see in the video how smooth and quick the acceleration is, because drivers are not struggling to find gears to deliver the torque.

Can you walk us through a typical day in the life of a Project Portal truck?

The truck usually starts off the morning with a quick charge (15 to 20min) — although it offers enough range that we do not have to charge up every day — before picking up cargo either at our operations in the port or our facilities in Long Beach and delivering to our locations in or around Los Angeles, or as far as Ontario, California, about sixty miles outside of Los Angeles. As is standard for this type of truck, it usually transports two or three loads a day, consisting mainly in vehicle parts coming from Japan. In the future, we may use it to transport vehicles.

How do battery electric and hydrogen stack up in the heavy vehicle market?

It’s hard to see how a battery electric truck would be practical in this market, mainly for two reasons. Batteries tack on about 10,000 pounds of extra weight, which cuts down on a truck’s ability to haul a full load and leads to a significantly lower utilization rate. That is a huge disadvantage in a business where total cost of ownership and the ability to move goods at the lowest cost per pound are the name of the game...more:

2020 Tokyo Games to use hydrogen fuel to light cauldrons, torch during relay

The organizing committee of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games is planning to use the next-genera- tion energy of hydrogen fuel to light the flames of the cauldrons and torch relay, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned. If realized, the 2020 Games would be the first Olympics to use the alternative energy source for this purpose.

Hydrogen produced at a state-of-the-art plant under construction in Fukushima Prefecture, which was devastated by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, will be used, the sources said. The Athletes’ Village also will use hydrogen fuel as a power source.

The organizing committee intends to showcase Japan’s advanced technology with hydrogen and reconstruction as themes during the event.

Swedish Housing Block Powered 100 Percent by Sun and Hydrogen

The world's first energy self-sufficient housing complex located in Vårgårda, Sweden, now runs entirely on solar energy and stored hydrogen as the result of a Danish-Swedish partnership between Better Energy and Nilsson Energy.

The solar-hydrogen Vårgårda project in Sweden is a breakthrough in clean energy and sustainable building. When the complex is completed and fully operational, a total of 172 flats in six housing blocks will be capable of operating completely free from external energy sources. Residents will be 100 percent independent and disconnected from electrical power grids, outside heating sources and fluctuating electricity prices. The rooftop solar PV panels alone will produce enough energy to meet their power needs year-round.

The challenge of renewable energy is that energy production and consumer demand do not always match. To overcome this challenge, a long-term storage solution is needed to provide electricity and heat when the sun shines less. By storing surplus energy in the form of hydrogen, solar-hydrogen projects offer a 100 percent clean, green, long-term storage solution.

Hydrogen gas has the largest energy content of any fuel, which means that a small amount of hydrogen can store a large amount of energy. Hydrogen is also chemically stable and can store energy for long periods of time. In a solar-hydrogen system, energy from the sun can be harnessed and stored for later use, producing only oxygen and pure water as waste products.

Scottish wind farm paid £96m to switch off | ILONA AMOS | 20 DEC 2018

Compensation payments of more than £500 million have been made to wind farms to switch off turbines over the past eight years, the latest figures show.

A new monthly record was set in September this year, when £28,434,560 was paid out by National Grid to stop electricity generation. Most cash was paid to Scottish wind farms, with some earning more than £1m a month for not supplying power.

Whitelee and its extension on the outskirts of Glasgow, the biggest onshore wind farm in the UK, has received almost a fifth of the entire pot since 2010, with payments totalling more than £96m to date.

Meanwhile, the 350MW Clyde scheme, near Abington in South Lanarkshire, has raked in more than £64m and the Griffin, near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, nearly £32m.

Power to Gas

Power-to-gas (often abbreviated P2G) is a technology that converts electrical power to a gas fuel. When using surplus power from wind generation, the concept is sometimes called windgas. There are currently three methods in use; all use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen by means of electrolysis.

In the first method, the resulting hydrogen is injected into the natural gas grid or is used in transport or industry. The second method is to combine the hydrogen with carbon dioxide and convert the two gases to methane (see natural gas) using a methanation reaction such as the Sabatier reaction, or biological methanation resulting in an extra energy conversion loss of 8%. The methane /SNG may then be fed into the natural gas grid or further converted in to LPG by synthesising SNG with partial reverse hydrogenation at high pressure and low temperature. LPG in turn can be converted into alkylate which is a premium gasoline blending stock because it has exceptional antiknock properties and gives clean burning. The third method uses the output gas of a wood gas generator or a biogas plant, after the biogas upgrader is mixed with the produced hydrogen from the electrolyzer, to upgrade the quality of the biogas...more:

Australia: Victoria announces hydrogen program, community renewables grants

On top of its major state-based solar and battery initiatives, the Victorian Labor government has initiated a new hydrogen program and awarded new grants for community renewables.

Minister for Energy Lily D’Ambrosio has announced the $2 million Victorian Hydrogen Investment Program, which will help fund a number of initiatives, including a grants program to kickstart Victoria’s hydrogen industry.

“Hydrogen fuel technologies can help boost local jobs in Victoria while helping us to tackle climate change,” Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio said.

Amid a growing number of research and pilot projects aimed at commercialization of hydrogen across Australia, Victoria will fund hydrogen research and trials and investigate ways to draw on the state’s increasing renewable energy resources and natural gas pipeline infrastructure.

Korea should make concerted efforts to preoccupy the market for hydrogen cars, as the industry is still in its infancy and the government is willing to turn the business into the nation's next growth engine, President Moon Jae-in said Tuesday.

"The government remains firm in its willingness to back up industries, such as hydrogen or electric vehicles, identifying them as the nation's next-generation growth engines," Moon said in a year-end meeting with officials from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Vehicles fueled with hydrogen are the talk of the global automobile industry, as hydrogen cars are eco-friendly and their fuel cost is cheaper than traditional cars powered by internal combustion engines. Unlike electric cars, the hydrogen vehicle is still in an infant stage of development.

Bloomberg: Senior China Official Urges Shift Toward Fuel-Cell Vehicles December 16, 2018

After spending billions of dollars in subsidies for lithium-battery electric cars, China should now shift its focus toward developing vehicles using the competing hydrogen fuel-cell technology, a former top official said.

Benefits of fuel-cell vehicles include long driving range, short refueling time and zero emissions, Wan Gang, a deputy chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, an advisory body to the parliament, wrote in a commentary published on the state-run People’s Daily on Saturday. His advocacy now of fuel-cell vehicles represents a potential boon for proponents of such cars -- including Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. as well as slew of aspiring local makers such as SAIC Motor Corp. and Great Wall Motor Co.
