Hamburger joints pricing themselves out of the market

Who in the hell would pay upwards of $13 for a simple hamburger?

https://www.wsj.com/articles/diners-are-finding-13-burgers-hard-to-swallow-1496241667

"All restaurant tabs have climbed in recent years as labor costs have risen due largely to state and local minimum wage increases. The cost of eating out—especially when cooking at home has gotten cheaper—is one major reason hamburger chains are seeing less foot traffic, NPD restaurant analyst Bonnie Riggs said.

Many burger places also have been placing a premium on their food. Those places have found they can beef up profits by charging extra for additional toppings.

“We’ve had a good 10% increase in average check over last couple of years,” said Andrew Wiederhorn, chief executive of Fatburger North America Inc. “Menu price increases are a piece of that, but 60% of it is from premium offerings we’ve added to the menu, like fried egg or guacamole.”

A basic hamburger at the Los Angeles-based chain starts at $5.94, but after adding bacon and chili, it is $8.14. With fries and a drink, the combo totals $13.37.

The Habit Restaurants Inc. has raised overall menu prices in response to rising labor costs and has added new, higher-priced items like a Portabella Charburger, which at $4.75 costs $1.40 more than the original Charburger. With fries and a medium drink, it comes to $8.75."

I love Roadside Americana

My wife and I went for a drive today up to one of our favorite bar/restaurants about 90 miles away up in Cook Forest, PA, which is some of the last Old Growth Forest east of the Mississippi. Great place, they have a deck out in the trees. It smells wonderful. The wildlife watching is great.

Anyways I digress.

Along the way, about half way there we pass, out in the middle of nowhere, the coolest hobby/toy shop I think I have ever seen, at least from an architectural standpoint. The whole building is sheathed in stainless steel and is designed to look like a Stealth Fighter or Spaceship or something. Beyond cool.

Anyways we couldn't resist the kid in us so we bought a Genetics and DNA Isolation and Education Kit. This thing is supposedly for kids but hell, a "toy" where I can extract and examine DNA from common food items is a MUST HAVE in the Currentsitguy/Ravenquills household.

If it involves chemistry, physics, technology, science in general, you can bet we either have it, or want it. Next winter's project, for when it's too damn cold to go outside, is to build a Rube Goldberg machine that makes a Martini.

Yeah, we both hit about 15 or 16 and basically stopped.

Quote from John Wayne

“Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It’s perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we’ve learned something from yesterday.”

Spanish woman claims ownership of the Sun

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/spain/8174180/Spanish-woman-claims-ownership-of-the-sun.html

"Angeles Duran, 49, from Vigo in Spain's northwestern region of Galicia, applied for ownership of the fiery star at the centre of our solar system after learning that similar claims had been made by an American on the Moon, Mars and Venus.

Although the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 prevents any government from staking their claim over celestial bodies it does not extend to private individuals, an opinion backed by her notary after consulting legal bodies in Spain.

Last week Miss Duran was issued with a document that declares she is "the owner of the Sun, a star of spectral type G2, located in the centre of the solar system, at an averaged distance from Earth of around 149,600,000 kilometres" (93 million miles).

"I know the law and backed my claim legally," she told local media. "I did it but anyone else could have done it, it simply occurred to me first."

She announced that she now plans to profit from her property and wants to charge those whose benefit from its energy.

She claims to have met representatives from Spain's Ministry of Industry to discuss levying a fee on photovoltaic plants for converting the sun's energy into electricity."

Disgusting: John Glenn's remains disrespected

http://www.militarytimes.com/articles/john-glenn-body-disrespected-air-force-mortuary

"WASHINGTON — A senior mortuary employee at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware twice offered horrified inspectors a peek at American icon John Glenn's dead body while the famed astronaut awaited burial earlier this year, according to an internal memo obtained by Military Times.

The disturbing allegation has outraged Pentagon officials and sparked a top-level investigation to determine whether misconduct was committed. The memo, written by Deborah Skillman, the Defense Department's director of casualty and mortuary affairs, states the employee's alleged actions were "clearly inappropriate and personally shocking.” The document is dated May 11. Berkeley Antifa Bike Lock Assault "Professor" Arrested for Assault

http://www.eastbaytimes.com/2017/05/24/berkeley-college-professor-arrested-as-assault-suspect/

"BERKELEY — The arrest of a former Diablo Valley College professor on Wednesday is connected to the use of a bike lock in the beating of three people during a rally for President Donald Trump last month, police said Thursday.

Eric Clanton remained in custody in lieu of $200,000 bail at Berkeley Jail on Thursday and will be arraigned Friday morning at 9 a.m. at Oakland’s Wiley W. Manuel courthouse. He was arrested on three counts of suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon that isn’t a firearm and assault causing great bodily injury.
In a statement Thursday, police acknowledged that video of the incident, captured by onlookers and posted on social media, helped them identify Clanton as the suspect behind “several violent assaults” that happened on April 15 during the demonstration at Civic Center Park on Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

Police confirmed Clanton can be seen in videos hitting people in the head with a U-shaped bicycle lock. Three people received “significant injuries” because of the beatings, police said."

BREAKING: Roger Ailes dead

http://thehill.com/homenews/media/334011-ex-fox-news-head-roger-ailes-dead-report

Statement from Elizabeth Ailes

I am profoundly sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes, passed away this morning. Roger was a loving husband to me, to his son Zachary, and a loyal friend to many. He was also a patriot, profoundly grateful to live in a country that gave him so much opportunity to work hard, to rise—and to give back. During a career that stretched over more than five decades, his work in entertainment, in politics, and in news affected the lives of many millions. And so even as we mourn his death, we celebrate his life...
