Nice work if you can get it

Like to get your drink on early in the morning? Enjoy free pizza? Don’t mind doing a few one-leg stands? The Vancouver Police Department is looking for you.

The police force has put out the word that they are looking for volunteers to get drunk on the police dime, in order to train new recruits on how to conduct sobriety tests.

The request is contained in an email recently sent to select members of the police department’s Block Watch neighbourhood watch program.

With a subject line reading “Volunteer Drinkers Needed,” the email says eight to 10 volunteers are needed to head down to a local police station early in the morning to get a little sloshed.

The volunteers will need to drink a few shots of hard liquor (“no beer or wine,” the email stresses), and then complete three sobriety tests:

a simple eye examination
a walk-and-turn test
a one-leg stand test
After a few hours of testing and a free pizza lunch, volunteers would then be driven home around 4 p.m.

All volunteer drinkers would have to sign a waiver promising not to drive for the rest of the day. And they would also have to agree to conduct themselves “in a respectful manner” in the police building.

The volunteers would be allowed to get their blood-alcohol concentration only to a certain level decided by instructors, so it won’t be a complete free-for-all boozefest.

And only those between the ages of 24 and 60 with no medical concerns need apply. Anyone taking medications that can’t be mixed with alcohol are also out of the running.

Interested parties were asked to RSVP, including in their email the drink and mixer of their choice.

Hell has frozen over! For once I agree with PETA.

You should not be cloning your pet.

It's not the same animal, anymore than a person would be. The time we have with those we love, including our pets, is precious and limited. Make the most out of every moment, but realize there is a time to let go. There are others out there who need and will love you and give you many more years and memories.

"PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said:

We all want our beloved dogs to live forever, but while it may sound like a good idea, cloning doesn’t achieve that — instead, it creates a new and different dog who has only the physical characteristics of the original. Animals’ personalities, quirks, and very ‘essence’ simply cannot be replicated, and when you consider that millions of wonderful adoptable dogs are languishing in animal shelters every year or dying in terrifying ways when abandoned, you realize that cloning adds to the homeless-animal population crisis. And because cloning has a high failure rate, many dogs are caged and tormented for every birth that actually occurs — so that’s not fair to them, despite the best intentions."

OK, so we got the Surfaces, Ask me anything. I know a few were curious.

It's almost midnight now so I've been setting up mine and helping my wife with her's for about 7 hours now.

Some config facts:
Core i7 real, not the "m" mobile device low power version
512GB SSD (wish I could have got the faster 1TB drive, but we can't justify the $400 difference, as it was these cost more than our latest car)
She got the Dial, I did not.
We both have the new version of the pen
We both sprung for the new Alcantara fabric covered keyboard type covers.
Full version of Windows 10. Someone suggested they come with the "S" version. It did not.

So far we both love them. I know it's not been long, but I have to say the build quality is impressive. It's very light, but it feels like a solid piece of metal, which, apart from the screen, it basically is.

The screen is amazing. I have read a lot about the Apple Retina display. This easily matches it. It is crisp, clear, and easy on the eyes.

Damn, this thing is fast. It easily exceeds my Asus Republic of Gamers G75. I suspect the graphics don't though.

So far I've pitched a Windows 10 Virtual Machine on. Working on Linux Mint now.

Anyways I'd be happy to answer any questions.

How is is possible to not crap in 38 DAYS??

A suspected drug dealer on a record-breaking toilet strike would rather die than take a poo, his lawyer has said. Lamarr Chambers, 24, has now spent 38 days in police custody after Essex Police arrested and detained him on January 17.

Appearing in court yesterday, his lawyer, Andrew Horsall QC, said he finds himself in ‘unchartered territory’ with Chambers. He said his client’s ‘life is at risk’ as he ‘doesn’t want to be resuscitated’ if he collapses, Essex Live reports. Officers believe he swallowed some of the drugs before his arrest in Harlow, Essex, and they have been patiently waiting for him to finally go ever since.

But with this waiting game now in its second month, Essex Police had no choice but to request more time to detain him in court. Chambers appeared before magistrates yesterday, where the force applied to keep him in custody until Monday.

Mr Horsall told Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Friday, to reject the application. He said: ‘Justice will be served one way or another, reject the application and continue with the case as it would be normally dealt with.’ Prosecutor Bob Rowlingson, however, said it was in the interest of justice to keep Chambers in police custody.

He told the court: ‘It is quite a clear cut application. Mr Chambers has been refusing treatment, it is clear he is preventing the passing of evidence of the drugs he swallowed prior to his arrest.’ He added: ‘The only thing stopping him being released is Mr Chambers himself.’ Last week, it was revealed what Chambers has been eating inside his cell. He started out eating Frosties cereal bars and as time went on, he would eat up to eight of them a day.

However, he has now swapped the bars for fruit and vegetables. And it was also revealed how Chambers ate some fish made by his mother just before he appeared before magistrates. Essex Police started a hashtag – #PooWatch – to keep us all updated about any sudden movements.

Well we have decided to take the plunge tomorrow

We are going out to get two Microsoft Surface Pro "tablets". I'm not sure if they are bloated tablets or laptops in a really small shell. It's an obscene outlay with all the accessories, and I hope it proves worth it.

I have to admit, it's the first piece of tech in years I actually feel excited about.
