If your conscience forbids you from performing certain duties ...

perhaps you should not seek employment in a field which requires you to fulfill those duties without prejudice.

Should vaccinations be mandatory for children?

I'm not talking about tetanus or other incident-specific vaccines. I refer solely to those inoculations which immunize virtually everyone who receives them from certain communicable diseases.

Trust me, folks, the Union will survive.

We established ourselves by winning a war against the strongest military power in the world, We made it through a devastating Civil War, the suspension of Habeas Corpus, the Great Depression, two World Wars, the clearly unconstitutional internment of American citizens, and Keeping up with the Kardashians. Those proclaiming the end of the Republic as a result of today's ACA ruling do nothing other than reveal themselves to be a group of remarkably pusillanimous pissants.
Sack up, kids, we'll be OK. The nation will endure. Sure, one day down the road the left will once again bemoan the end of Democracy. And not long after that the right will tell us how we're all going to Hell in a hand basket.
But long after that cowardly coterie of whining defeatists take their dirt nap, America will continue to survive.

Governor Larry Hogan (R-MD) just announced that ...

he has an aggressive form of lymphomatic cancer. As a survivor of two different bouts with that disease, all I can say is that my prayers are with him.
I HATE fucking cancer! It took my Dad, it tried to take me, and it continues to take loved ones from their families. One day … one day soon, I hope … we will kick it's ass.

SC Supreme Court orders judge removed from Dylann Roof ...

shooting case. Apparently the jurist assigned to hear the case, James Gosnell Jr., had previously been censured for uttering racist remarks from the bench.

on edit: The original story was incorrect, and has been edited at the source. The judge was not removed from the case. He was previously reprimanded for racist conduct, but that has no bearing on the fact that he will not adjudicate the Roof trial.

The Confederacy: Hate or heritage?

I have heard numerous arguments regarding the "respect for Southern heritage" defense in the honoring of Confederate sympathizers and symbols. I have repeatedly heard it said that slavery and the subjugation of Africans were in no way large factors in the genesis of Southern secession. Then I found this:

"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth."

Alexander H. Stevens, describing the foundations of the Confederacy in Savannah, GA ... March 21, 1861.

Is Fox Sports going to "Fox up" the US Open?

This has nothing to do with politics or Fox News. But are we going to be treated to sound effects, funky graphics, and robots?
I hate that the USGA went for the money, and bailed on NBC for the Fox bucks. Fox has the rights to exactly one golf tournament per year, and, based on that, they will not be able to lure the people who know the game to their network.
Joe Buck is fine, but he knows shit about golf. Norman knows the game, but he's a broadcast newcomer.
Maybe it will work out , (but mostly, I'll really miss Johnny Miller's commentary).

Does anyone here view Trump as a serious candidate?

Is Papal infallibility no longer a "thing"?

I remember when previous Popes issued encyclicals pertaining to the unacceptability of same-sex marriage, and abortion; conservative politicians vocally rallied behind the 2,000 year old doctrine which ascribed an intrinsic rightness to any and all successors to Saint Peter.
But now, when a Pope has signaled his intention to issue an encyclical describing the dangers of climate change, conservative Catholics appear to be saying, "What does this guy know? He's not a scientist!"
Seems like a rather sudden and massive doctrinal shift.

Not a well thought-out post.
