MILWAUKEE -- The man accused of fatally shooting a Milwaukee police officer Wednesday evening has been identified by police as Jonathan Copeland Jr.

Copeland Jr., 30, is accused of opening fire on Officer Michael Michalski after officers responded to a wanted subject call in the area of N. 28th St. and W. Wright Ave.

At a Thursday news conference, Police Chief Alfonso Morales said Copeland Jr. has a long criminal history, including various gun and drug offenses.

Unarmed white baby burned to death

A 25-year-old woman has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of an infant last week in Natchitoches.

Felicia Marie-Nicole Smith was booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center Saturday in connection to the death of Levi Cole Ellerbe.

According to the Natchitoches Police Department, the boy was kidnapped from his mother on Tuesday night. The mother had opened her door after a knock, and two suspects sprayed her in the face with what she believed to be Mace.

He was found just more than an hour later in a fire that had been set beside a railroad track of Breda Avenue, about a mile-and-a-half away from the trailer park on the La. Highway 1 Bypass from where he was taken.

Baltimore police stopped noticing crime after Freddie Gray's death. A wave of killings followed.

BALTIMORE – Just before a wave of violence turned Baltimore into the nation’s deadliest big city, a curious thing happened to its police force: officers suddenly seemed to stop noticing crime.

Police officers reported seeing fewer drug dealers on street corners. They encountered fewer people who had open arrest warrants.

Police questioned fewer people on the street. They stopped fewer cars.

In the space of just a few days in spring 2015 – as Baltimore faced a wave of rioting after Freddie Gray, a black man, died from injuries he suffered in the back of a police van – officers in nearly every part of the city appeared to turn a blind eye to everyday violations. They still answered calls for help. But the number of potential violations they reported seeing themselves dropped by nearly half. It has largely stayed that way ever since.
