MAGA:Trump, GOP senators unveil measure to cut legal immigration

President Trump on Wednesday teamed up with two conservative Republican senators to roll out new legislation aimed at dramatically curbing legal immigration to the United States, a key Trump campaign promise.

Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.) have been working with White House officials to revise and expand a bill released earlier this year that would halve the number of people who receive legal permanent residence over a decade.

The senators joined Trump at a White House ceremony to announce the measure.
The president told reporters in the Roosevelt Room that the measure “would represent the most significant reform to our immigration system in a half a century."

They say the legislation would move the United States to a "merit-based" immigration system and away from the current model, which is largely based on family ties.

The measure reflects Trump’s rhetoric during the 2016 campaign, when he argued that the spike in legal immigration over the past several decades has taken job opportunities away from American citizens and threatened national security.

1. Merit-based means no welfare/food stamp immigrants...

They would have to show what skills they bring with them to enhance our nation and prove how they will support themselves. Bringing in uneducated and non producing family would also be eliminated.

This is exactly how the Canadians view immigration and how it should have been for the last 50 years in our nation.

4. This is also

how Mexico's immigration laws work.

Funny how lefty only uses the bandwagon propaganda for certain issues and ignores the rest of the world for their pet schemes.

7. No they are not those affected ..If skilled in a trade they are welcome... Below is a small cut of

those being reconsidered...

"The legislation would eliminate immigration preferences currently given to extended family members and adult children of U.S. citizens seeking green cards, and it would cap the number of accepted refugees at 50,000 — half of the Obama administration’s target for 2017.

It would also end the State Department's Diversity visa lottery, which the senators say is “plagued with fraud.” The program had been allotted 50,000 visas for the 2018 fiscal year.

About 1 million immigrants receive green cards per year.

Conservative outside groups immediately praised the legislation and called for the Senate to vote on the bill."

10. That's a problem-- H1b and to some extent H2b visas are well known to...

cause reduced wages. And reduced wages among highly skilled technical people.

13. Yes i agree with you but do you think 11 million illegal aliens are reducing wages?

You do know that a lot of the H1b's are for computer related jobs run by liberals such as FB and most of silicon valley...

14. Liberals shmiberals-- more H1b's are working at Sony and AT&T...

We have hundreds, maybe thousands of illegals in my town-- they pick grapes, do landscaping and some do roofing and siding.

Nobody else wants these jobs at any pay. Agriculture always pays less, by Federal law, but the other jobs pay pretty well.

17. I am sure if Americans were offered decent money they would do farming but when farmers get cheap

labor why would they pay Americans more?
Interesting your liberal logic 11 million illegals are ok but guys who come here legally are bad...

Thats sure some logic you got going on...

8. This is not the right way to reform immigration. Reason being it would result in more undocumented

immigrants. Immigration should be reformed by making it easier to legally immigrate into this country, which would result in fewer undocumented immigrants. And the idea that immigrants would just collect welfare and not work is a fallacy.

11. When did you immigrate

and how long have you been collecting disability? I recall you posting that you are disabled.

IMO, if one is well enough to sit at the computer and post on message boards all day long then they are well enough to hold a job that requires sitting at a computer all day long -- amirite?

12. "...immigrants would just collect welfare and not work is a fallacy."

A good percentage of them already do that.

If we allow people into this country, they should be self-sufficient and speak English.

That is for THEIR good as well as OURS.

There is no reason this should not have been our policy since the beginning.

Instead, the left has politicized it.

It's disgusting.

15. There is no such thing as an "undocumented immigrant"

Immigrants either come here legally or illegally. Calling illegal immigrants undocumented is purposefully ignoring that they are all criminals who violated the law to enter the country.

19. But it does reveal to the American public what politicians think about immigration laws....

That's what i love about the left they whine and complain about low paying jobs but are happy with illegal aliens and bringing in people and families with no skills..

Trumps immigration policy makes sense for the 21st century refine immigration bring in only those qualified and no bringing in your whole family....

You are probably sad sanctuary cities won't have more cheap labor, huh?
