Connecticut Man Charged In Social Media Threat Against Puerto Rican Festival [View all]

A threatening Facebook comment targeting a popular Puerto Rican event landed a Connecticut man in jail hours before the festival was set to begin on Saturday.

Police in New Haven said 53-year-old Jeffrey Hanson responded to a television station’s post about the Puerto Rican Day Festival, saying the event was an example of why “we need 30 round magazines.”

The threat, posted on Wednesday, sparked fears of an attack and immediately led to a police investigation. But even as authorities searched for the author of the post, they assured the pubic that the threat was not credible and promised extra security at the event.

Hanson, a resident of Orange who is white, was charged with breach of peace and was being held Saturday on a $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
